Good share. Makes me wonder if the R2 bars would fit the R1. I don’t “think” I max out the current R1 bars on my S. Maybe the bed if the T maxes them out.

I'd love someone to confirm whether the R1 feet will actually click into and stay snug on the R2 roof mounts. The R2 feet and mounts are clearly more square, but if they are interchangeable, one might be tempted to disassemble and cut down the R1 bars to yield the shorter span.

There was a post a while back of someone showing the R1 crossbars sitting atop their R2. The feet are substantially different and will not fit in the mounts as-is, though some people were wondering if they could be modified to fit. I haven't seen anyone attempt that modification yet though.

The mounts are different. So no cross compatibility. Strange decision, among others, to not share parts. They probably have their reasons.

Thank you for confirming. I also suspected that there's a legit engineering reason behind the change in the foot design.

Thank you for the response. I've seen a few posts saying the bars aren't compatible because of width, but not one testing the clamp-in feature. I admit that I can't read all the posts.
I trust that Rivian had a good engineering reason to update the mounts, given how they market cross-model accessory compatibility and how much Rivian owners want this.

I really wished they would have incorporated power into the connection points and light accessories, along with powered tent ideas. I know they submitted a patent for it but maybe we'll never actually see it.

The video does indeed show the two different types of crossbars side by side. They don't, however, try to install them on the opposite videos or anything like that. The reviewer shows the connection points though and you can see they're different and they are lined up and you can see how they are of different lengths.

My theory is that they may have set out to make them compatible but something along the way dictated they could not be so they made the mounts different enough that they could not be modified to work. I imagine they don't want people attempting to modify the R1 bars, either the shape of the foot/latch or the minimum extension length, as errors could cause serious damage or even death. Imagine if the bars broke off at highway speed while carrying a roof-load of cargo.

Its also possible that they simply learned a lot since designing the R1 mounts and chose to implement those lessons now. They could have refreshed the mount for Gen 2 R1, or any model year, but that would have made people even more mad.

I won't be surprised if Gen3 R1 adopts the new mounting system, but I also won't be surprised if they keep the line bifurcated by R1/R2.

They do not. You cant even get them to engae due t the new foot design. The R2s have a ledge around the base while the R1s do not

So you haven't even watched it and your judging it?

Like I said, every single comment before mine (mine was post #9) was from people saying he didn't discuss those points or answering those points he didn't discuss. So why bother watching if that's what I was interested in seeing? Are you saying they were lying?

However, if I were to get judgy, it would be about your spelling.
