What speed are you towing? I'm trying to get a handle on which trailer shapes get what sort of efficiency.

Mainly 60-70 mph on fairly flat US Hwy 290 between Johnson City and Stonewall, Texas. Includes couple 35-45 mph miles passing through Johnson City.

Been a while since there's been some new trailers in this thread, bumping this up to see if there's more discussion to be had (and we'll have R2 towing to discuss sooner than not, I think!)

At 90kw, the r2 will have about 150 mile max range driving carefully with an efficient trailer. That'll be 1.7mi/kwh

Tent trailers and similar folding ones like trailmanor or A liner will be the best "large" choices. Teardrop ones up to the size of a tab or tada or the airstream mini one would be the practical non folding choices.

Good news is even a tt30 campsite outlet should get it going again in a day.

Upgraded my Airstream 23CB for a 27FB Flying Cloud about 6 months ago, averaging 1.1 mi/kWh. It’s 7800lbs and my BFGs knock down the range a bit -

We sold our inTech Sol Horizon and moved to a larger Airstream Globetrotter 27FBT in March of this year. We have averaged 1.2 mi/kWh over 4500 miles with trips in Colorado, Nebraska, Utah, and Texas. Worst efficiency was 0.7 mi/kWh in strong headwinds in NE New Mexico. Switched from a BulletProof rigid hitch to a Shocker 14K Air Max hitch to soften the ride on the Airstream. I usually drive a max of 60 mph, occasionally 65 mph on the interstate if the charging stops fit my plan (mentioning as this informs the average efficiency).

We wanted more space. The Horizon was great for a 3 or 4 day trip but the some of the limitations would have worn on us for a 2 week to 2 month trip. The true queen bed in the Horizon is nice but it is a hassle to crawl over someone to get into bed and likely wakes the other person if you get up in the middle of the night. I also wished there was more storage for my clothes and other personal items. It felt like we were always moving things around -- if we were in the dinette, then the dog could go up on the bed (and vice-versa). If someone was going in/out of the bathroom, the person in the galley had to move. All of this was known going in, and is part of the charm of the Sol line. We just thought we'd be happier with something larger once we retired and started going on longer trips.

We really liked the Horizon and what inTech has going and considered the larger Aucta models. Ultimately the Airstream's interior and exterior styling, lower height, quality of materials, and thoughtful interior storage won us over.

EDIT: If the weather is nice and you spend most time outside at the campsite, then some of these issues are less impactful. We've encountered some wind, rain, snow, and freezing temps where we have had to spend extended time in the rig and it's nice to have more space.

My partner and I just wrapped up our massive Seattle to Colorado four thousand mile College drop off road trip with our Intech Sol Horizon, 2 Adults, 2 Teens, 2 Dogs on the way out and one less Teen on the way back. My partner is seriously eyeballing larger trailers already. It was tight, but good.

@robd responded very thoughtfully here, just wanted to add that Airstreams are just extremely well layed out and built. They don’t have the power assist of some of these innovative new trailers, but they are lighter and more aerodynamic than most other RVs. The real magic is being inside, they are bright and roomy with functional storage that makes you think “oh that makes sense”. If you are going to spend a lot of time in an RV, highly recommended.

I looked at them before getting my inTech Sol Dawn..... Airstreams are still basing their price a lot on their name, which put even a used Basecamp out of my budget range.

@VandalSibs, no doubt they are more expensive. I don’t have any objective data that says they have a higher profit margin based on the name, but I suspect there is some — that is how most every product works that has different tiers starting at a basic level and going up to a premium or luxury product. Heck we see it with the Rivian trim levels.

There a number of factors that go into making a purchase like this, many of them subjective. Over a year ago, the Basecamp was near the top of my list in trailers I was interested in. After seeing it in person, I didn’t see the value proposition. I really liked the Oliver Elite II but realized It would seem cramped and of course the prices are high. The inTech floorplans with the large dinettes and front window make it feel so much more roomy and inviting.

Once we spent more time looking at larger trailers (and not wanting a slide), we started to really appreciate the design, construction, and thoughtful details of the larger Airstreams. We bought a lightly used model (just like with the Horizon) to avoid some of the big depreciation hit.

We have been towing our 19' Airstream for a year with our Gen 2 with max pack dual motor R1S. After 10 trips totaling more than 5000 miles our average mileage has been 1.2 miles/kWh. Most of the miles have been on freeway at typically 63 miles per hour. When a leg of the trip includes 3000' of climb the mileage drops to about 1.0 miles/kWh. The trailer weighs 4500 lbs max. We'll start a trip charged to 100%, then charge to 80% while on the road. Going from 80% to 20% gives a reliable range of 100 miles. Needless to say we don't leave home without carefully planning our charging stops.
We have stayed at a number of state parks and private RV parks in Washington and Oregon. A pleasant surprise has been the ability to use the campgrounds' 50 A 220 V hook-ups to recharge overnight everywhere we have stayed. We always ask when we arrive and promise not to charge higher than 80%. One private RV park charged us an additional $3/night, while all the rest added no cost. A ranger at one Oregon state park told clearly not to charge above 80% or he would be out replacing our electrical hook-ups.
