R2 Demo - car camping, audio, driving, frunk

Just did first R2 demo in Portland

About me:
- 6 feet tall
- current R1T Gen 1 quad owner
- planning to move to urban city at some point within the next year, needing to down size

Overall: loved it, will buy when I make the move from Bend back to city life. Light interior will make it feel amazing

Pros:
- gorgeous in-person, all colors looked great but CC in particular is great
- driver and interior seating, positioning, displays, everything felt super comfortable
- rear drop glass is cool, but I wouldn’t say “wow!” like most, a nice plus
- driving: it whips. Amazing how much 2,000 pounds less makes a difference. Really tight, great steering
- I don’t know what the complaints are about with the charge port door or the “capacitive” buttons. They work fine. No problems here

Okay:
- I was prepared for audio to be bad. It was just okay, not nearly as good as Meridian and does sound a bit muffled or tough to dial in right. But it’s definitely acceptable and passes
- it almost whips “too much” even in All Purpose. The accelerator pedal dynamics are way more sensitive than R1, and regen too even in normal. I’d prefer if All Purpose mode was a bit more chill. The R2 was on the all terrain tires too!

Bad:
- sadly for car camping, it is not possible as a 6 ft tall person to lay down flat and straight in the R2. Period. I was curious because Rivian has said “95th percentile guy” without specifying what that means or any measurements. I’m 6 feet and it was not possible to lay flat and straight, period. You can make it work bending knees or laying diagonally.
- the frunk requires a lot of force even to get it to the soft close. It will definitely accumulate finger/hand prints when using. Also I wish it would raise higher but as a 6 foot guy I need to duck a bit to reach into it. It’s indeed quite loud opening but that part doesn’t bother me

I'm probably fine at 5'10" and a side sleeper anyway, but did you move the driver or front passenger seat forward at all when trying out the length for yourself or those taller?

I ask because Hest specify their Foamy for R2 mattress at a length of 78". Now some of that is bridging over any space between the back of the seats and the back of the folded rear seats by suspending the mattress from the front headrests. If measuring from rear tailgate to front of the folded rear seats then I could see that being less than 6', but I don't have an R2 to measure and can't recall seeing a measure of it, although someone must have done so by now.

Hopefully someone who already has an R2 will stop by and post the absolute maximum measurement with front row seats as far forward as they will go. In the interim the Hest YT video instructions seem to show it lying flat.

Yeah funnily enough I had seen pics like this, attempted to do exactly that, but it wouldn’t budge. I asked the show room rep and he mentioned it couldn’t raise any higher even with pushing. I cited the pics/videos I’d seen like this one, and he said maybe they were earlier or pre-production cars. I dunno it just wouldn’t raise . I hope they normally do though if this was a one-off?

I use a Luno mattress in my Outback. I'm 6 ft tall and I have to move the front seats all the way forward. Their mattress is just 2 inches longer than the space, and I sleep super comfortably.

Here is a link to someone sleeping with the mattress described above. The full length of the mattress seems to be usable.

It's a little stiff if you haven't done it in a while, seems like the seals could probably stand to get lubricant occasionally.

I’ve been wondering about this too… Perhaps a cheap solution would be to slide the seats forward a bit and have some simple collapsible stool device that fills the space in the footwell at just the right height. Maybe even a carry-on suitcase on its side, with a few towels as padding to bring it up to height.

New mattresses have a hanging solution that suspends the mattress from the front seats. The old Luno mattress used inflatable cubes for support, but not anymore.

Greg, dont move to the city. I did that for a girl and regret it daily. R2 just came out. Let the dust settle and see if it's worth switching from your R1. I see a lot of R1s around the city. Thanks for the great write-up. All the best.
