Tire Mobility Kit (R2) - closer look photos

If you haven't seen the Tire Mobility Kit in person, you may be wondering how it works. Neither the product page nor the R2 Owners Guide show it being used without the sealant canister, so it was not clear to me whether it could be used as a standard air pump, or if the canister is one-time-use.

Below are some photos of the kit to help you understand how it works, before you end up needing it. Some additional notes:

• The hose does indeed attach to either the pump or the canister
• The power cord appears very long (I did not unravel it, see below), and should easily reach any tire from the 12V outlet in the cargo area
• The power cord and hose stow on the bottom of the pump
• Re-winding the power cord neatly enough to get it back into its storage cubby may be difficult
  • I immediately thought of those awful air mattress built-in pumps with compartments for the power cord that never seem big enough for the plug

So the only instructions for using the compressor without the canister (#1a) are actually on the canister (#7-9)? Probably cooked up by the (former) HMG paint quality inspector?

It's mentioned in the video linked by the QR code on the pump itself, but in both cases it is shown being used after the canister. That's part of the reason I was unsure if it could be used for air only (eg a bike tire, or slow nuisance leak). Definitely could benefit from some additional documentation (esp. since the 15 minute limit is not documented on the pump, and is presumably to prevent overheating).

This comes with every R2 even if you don't add the compact spare tire option?

It definitely comes without the spare, it is the alternative to throwing on a new wheel if you get a flat. I am not sure if they remove it if you option the spare tire instead, but I would be surprised if it wasn't there.

FYI, it's the EXACT same kit that comes with R1 as well (at least my R1S came with it 2 years ago). I had to use it within the first week as I got a flat (I used compressor, not the sealant). And yes, once you unravel the power cord you'll never get it to fit back in there nicely again.

It's a very basic air pump, it can't be that hard to use. But, I'm sure there will be someone who will struggle and then post a long rant on here about it, ha!

Thanks for sharing the pictures and info. Just 02 cents, that looks really cheap. Guess most manufacturers figure people will rarely use it, so another way to cut costs. I get it, but man. I wouldn't rely on anything in that kit in an emergency.

I've encountered the same unit on VW/Porsche/Audi, Mercedes, BMW, and Ford products. Fortunately have only had to use it twice, the goop once. I can confirm it's pretty much imposible to get the power cord back into its home in any situation you need the pump on a non-leisure basis.

Agree, definitely will opt for the spare tire.
