I think you missed half his comment. If he holds the steering wheel with hands below the mid point, he gets the alerts, even though he's holding the steering. Nothing illegal or unsafe about this. I always drive when in open traffic with my hands at the bottom of the steering wheel as it's way more relaxing. I'll have to take another test drive to see if this is an issue for me as well. It'd probably be a deal breaker.
It's also safer to hold the wheel on the bottom half. Less risk of wrists breaking when the airbags deploy.

Let us know the final determination from your SC. Interested to learn is they tell you to wait for a forthcoming software update.
Yup, so what i ended up with is this: it has to be a future fix - Software update or "other solution", the engineering team is working on it. Best hope, is it gets fixed by the P2P updates. No timelines.

The alignment and wheel balancing were done at the SC and did not help. Although it is good to get these done to make sure there are no structural issues.

I am going in for another service to try to push for more geometry work (alignment / balancing ) and am still deciding whether to find a reputable third party to review the geometry work.

I love this car. I wish i didn't have this issue. At this point, it's a waiting game for me, hoping to get good news or the car gets worse or irritable that I will have to call it a lemon.

1. They don't have a root cause and is not yet a priority (I got that impression btw, is this happening enough??)
2. They suspect a few things that they don't know how to fix at scale / remotely
3. If fixable through software, there is another way to fix it

Finally, if I had to solve this (which i'm not qualified to):
1. Establish the base geometry: in-spec or better on alignment, balancing and caster weights
2. Reset / Re-Zero Steering Angle & Torque Sensors: Whenever the alignment is modified, the EPS column sensors must be zeroed so the computer knows true dead-center.
3. Run Dynamic ADAS Camera Calibration: Force an automated pitch/yaw re-learn on the forward-facing vision suite to prevent heading calculation errors from triggering steering jitter.
4. Verify EPS Firmware / Log Commands: If the shimmy continues post-calibration, have the tech capture real-time diagnostic logs while UHF is active to verify if the rack needs updated damping parameters from engineering (this is likely the software fix...).

I suspect the engineering team will get this figured out. One thing for sure…it needs to be fixed as it’s unacceptable in its current state. I like the R2 a lot but this is a major disappointment.

I haven’t driven a Rivian yet with UHF, but there is probably some driver feedback function for altertness and feedback TO the driver for lack of alterNess. And somewhere there is a sensor and a solenoid to drive that feedback.. and a glitch with that mechanism, the sensing or the interpretation OF the sensing?

Or, since it’s somewhat specific speed dependent, once AT that speed there Is enough vehicle feedback to trip and confuse the sensor.

As for driver attention, I think it just displays a warning on the screen and plays chimes, then eventually disengages UHF. I don't think it vibrates to get your attention (and if not holding the wheel, vibration probably isn't that helpful).

It feels more likely to me that there is some harmonic with the UHF sensing loop that is monitoring the road and steering input with the actuator that actually moves the steering wheel for you. The harmonic is causing it to make micro-adjustments that are within the tolerance of the steering rack so it's not actually translating to the wheels but does wobble the steering wheel.

I don't think so. It's Universal Hands Free, it doesn't require you to touch the wheel at all unless it detects something it can't handle and wants to disengage (eg a high speed turn). It uses sensors in the rear view mirror to monitor the driver's gaze and alerts if you take your eyes off the road for more than a few seconds.
