Rivian has announced in new stories post that point-to-point assisted driving will still roll out starting later this year, with widespread rollout in 2027.

"Enter an address and supervise while your vehicle follows the route from start to finish, handling city streets, highway interchanges and everything in between. A limited rollout begins later this year, with a widespread customer rollout targeted for 2027.
The path from Universal Hands-Free to Point-to-Point is shorter than it looks from the outside, because so much of the work is already done.
Every mile our fleet drives makes our Large Driving Model smarter for the next one. That's the engine driving R2 autonomy: not just a sensor suite, but a constantly learning fleet powering a vehicle that keeps evolving right in your driveway."

Well that's disappointing. They kept insisting it was rolling out this year. I guess technically the can say they are right but if its not in all delivered R2s that sucks. Also 2027 is an extremely vague timeline for full rollout.

I don't think there is enough information to suggest that it won't roll out to all R2s. It could be a different release schedule for R2 vs R1T vs R1S for all we know. Regardless, I'd rather have it rolled out when it's right then too soon, then have it stopped and delayed. Remember that whether we own Rivian stock or not, everyone that owns a Rivian needs Wall Street to not pound them based on this roll-out for the sake of their future viability.

Sure sounds familiar…. Heard this as I waited for my R1 to be delivered.. promising it would be available “soon”.

This is good information, and it is encouraging for Rivian. Yet, as a person who has a reservation, possibly with a delivery in December, for the R2 Premium with Launch Package, I wonder if not having LIDAR installed would drastically decrease the value of my vehicle. Any thoughts/opinions? Thanks!

This is my R2 Dilemma: purchase now and get point-to-point self-driving s00nish and take advantage of the launch package (Autonomy+ included, tow package for about $3k in savings), OR wait for LIDAR which won't realistically have functionality until 2028, possibly cost more (I foresee this being an additional subscription), and lose out on the Autonomy+ and tow package)...

In my current R2 I am in UHF about 95% of my office commute today. Only getting on and off the highway then interchanges. Everything else the car drives for me. I am very impressed with the quality of the system. I agree with you on future price, I also don't care about eyes off P2P. The present enjoyment outweighs a future uncertainty.

Also, another item people have been neglecting is the unknow related to a completely new processor. This is a major concern for hardware and software.

I don’t think LIDAR will affect the value as much as the new hardware/chip that will ship with the LIDAR vehicles. Gen2 and R2-launch vehicles will be able to do L3 Autonomy driving while LIDAR with new chip is expected to perform L4 Autonomy. Who really knows how this all plays out and effects value of the vehicles.

This has been discussed extensively in other threads.

In my opinion:
  • LiDAR will not cost more (outside of a wholesale price adjustment)
  • LiDAR will be standard equipment, except possibly on the cheapest trim
    • Rivian needs as much LiDAR data as possible to feed the LDM data-flywheel, and the ~$100 component cost of the LiDAR module is not enough to justify not having it on basically every car.
  • LiDAR will not give any advantage to equipped vehicles for 2-3 years
  • RAP1 will not give any advantage to equipped vehicles for 3-4 years
  • RAP1 is new silicon/architecture and will likely have wrinkles to work out.
  • Autonomy+ is likely to get more expensive in the coming years as more features are added
Based on those, I landed happily in the "buy LE now" camp over the "wait for LiDAR/RAP1" camp. I'd rather get the $2500 discount on Autonomy+ than have over-provisioned hardware that won't provide unique value for several years (if ever) and have to pay an extra $2500+ for Autonomy+.

It also helps that I am coming from an old ICE vehicle so any amount of ADAS is an improvement. If you are coming from something that already had Autonomy+ level features or better, the calculus could be different.

This was to be expected since we are four months from the end of the year and widespread P2P was highly unlikely - so this limited roll out makes sense . They have done this kind of approach before for other things like release dates for sales to comply with the letter of their commitments.

Those of us who’ve dealt with Elon’s antics over the years are inoculated to optimistic timelines. Sounds like this is pretty much in line with the plan, premature to get upset.

This seems to be a similar feeling. I also wonder if the Rivian/Uber R2 deal will also decrease the overall value of the vehicle longterm.

Excellent thought process. Thank you!

The uber deal will be for standard versions as its cost optimized for what Uber would want.
