R2 felt pretty quick in All-Purpose mode too. I think Sport mode gives you full beans when rolling but only Launch Mode gives you a boost at the beginning. I prefer Tesla's approach which is to give you everything in its highest setting without launch mode (unless you have a suspension that can adjust height to launch better).
Does it simulate the turbo lag of an ICE car? :)

Very familiar with this route(405/55/91/60/10), I am from Orange County. There is always traffic, especially the 91.

No shot you are ever driving a constant 70mph on those freeways. Maybe at 3am.
I lived in Laguna when the 55 originally opened.. it was like my own private Autobahn.

...The drive was 252.9 miles, all was highway except for 9 miles. If anyone is familiar with SoCal freeways were 405/55/91/60/10....

Thank you for the detailed feedback. One question and if I missed it, my apologies in advance.

Your image above shows 71 mph. Was this the typical and most of the freeway speed? The average speed value is not a good indication of actual cruise speed so just curious about the cruise speed on the freeway.

Thanks in advance!

Funny that you bring this up. It felt kinda like turbo lag below 45 mph then it hit pretty hard past that. Highway passing power is definitely the R2 forte.

I'm curious what your destination was. Depending on how far into the Coachella valley you went, that's some serious elevation on the way home. It goes below sea level around Indio, if you went that far.

I10 is 70 mph, there was no traffic so it was set to 70 (71 to correct For the 1 mph difference. With a GPS app when car says 70 GPS was 69). The other freeways were 65 speed limits so I was setting cruise at 66 or 67. There was a little traffic on those but most of the flow was 65.

All R2s need to come with this sticker so you can get above 3.0 MPK:

Interesting, maybe it needs time to engage front wheels , this is concerning

Went to Jackson street in Indio from Huntington Beach at the 405.

Not the lowest area of the valley, our lowest was 15 feet below sea level, high point was 2610 above.

No, it isn't. This is 100% by design. Rivian have said multiple times that they tuned the R2 to have the most power in the ~45-80mph range.

Just want to say the R2 is not a dog off the line in all-Purpose by any stretch.

I’m not really sure what the concern is, still much faster than it needs to be on public roads and very few vehicles will beat it across the intersection on a green light.

That 20 miles or so stretch of the 10 from Cabazon and Palm Spring can have wildly varied impacts on range. Heading to Palm Spring from that direction in my Gen 2 R1S can yield up to 4 mi/kwh (I think that's the max displayed range) due to low cross winds and reducing elevation. But then as you head back, the crosswinds are crazy and the elevation gain cause my efficiency dropping to around 1.1 mi/kwh. I will need to observe the behaviors of my R2 on that stretch. But I'm curious how this impacted your trip.

I don't see the benefit of neck breaking, off the line power in a non sports car.

It also leads me to believe the power delivery is geared towards the European market and not just the US which is more 0-60 focused.

I think the display in the R1 tops at 10 m/kWh now. It was updated a while ago. The wind was not bad during this drive. Climbing out of the valley up to Whitewater I am usually in the mid 1.x m/kWh in the R1S. I think the lowest I saw in the R2 was 2.2 m/kWh on that climb.

The picture taken showing 8.3 m/kWh was taken in that area heading into the valley.

Charged my R2 to 100% and headed out to the desert to see what traveling in the real world would be like in the R2.

It was a hot day when I left it was 89 degrees, 35 miles in I was in triple digits, it stayed in triple digits for most of the drive dropping under 100 for the last 20 miles. Out of the 259 miles 200 was in triple digits much over 108 and topped out at 117. I did spot check the battery and motor temps, apologies for no pictures but I never saw the motors go past the halfway mark on the lines when I checked. Highest battery temp I saw was 119.

The HVAC system worked well. It was a cloudless day so 100% sun and we got on the road at 11 am and was back just before 4:30 pm. While driving had no issues maintaining a comfortable interior, used manual, temp was set at 67 and fan mostly on number 3, we did use the seat coolers as well. We did stop for lunch before the return trip. It was full sun and 115 degrees, so it did get warm in the cabin, we lowered the windows, put the fan on high for the first couple of miles to the freeway, on the freeway rolled up the windows and the cabin was comfortable within 5 minutes, set the fan back to 3 and we were good for the ride home.

Now for the drive. Used conserve for the entire drive, at 100% it estimated 334 miles.

Arrived back with 10% with an estimated 32 miles of range left. That could get me around 285 miles in normal highway driving.

I was using Universal Hands Free for much of the trip. I make this drive frequently so it was a good test for me. Compared to highway assist on my G1 R1S there were a few places where lanes split or construction corrected lines where the R1S struggles, the R2 handled those places very well. By the time we returned home I was left with a very positive feeling towards UHF, will be curious where they take it from here.

The car was comfortable and quiet, we used the soft suspension setting in conserve, it smoothed out expansion strips but still held the road well. Based on this test (no charging today) I think it will be a decent road trip vehicle for us. I was hoping for a 2.8 m/kWh average, it ended up at 3.2 which is almost 1 full mile better than the 2.25 I usually see in the R1S.

this was the destination total at the turn around

IMG_1973.webp
The first part of the trip out had a higher average speed and a better m/kWh.

It was over 110 out there, The 8 miles driving around there and the high temps hurt the average speed as well as the m/kWh with the BMS maintaining the systems. I usually park in a garage out there but was running errands so the vehicle was baking in the sun.

Many of my trips average in the mid 50s low 60s by the time I get home. These are a couple of R1S trips.
