R2 vs Model Y 70-MPH Highway Range Test (by Out of Spec)

What is annoying about all this efficiency covfefe is that ABRP (which rivian owns) has the efficiency or energy usage specification for the R2 Performance set to 3.55mile/kw.. so when using ABRP to plan a route, it’s just going to be most likely catastrophically off no?

Rivian vehicles have an advantage on ABRP where you get live data for free and basically no friction to add them. Lemme plug my camper in tonight and run a route to see what it suggests. It's going to be terrible I am sure.

I think the numbers in ABRP are just placeholders or guesstimates from the folks in Sweden waiting for actual data; for example, the RWD Standard Long Range trim lists a reference consumption at 110 km/h at 3.35 mi/kWh, even though its EPA number is expected to beat the AWD Performance trim.

But for one to VASTLY underperform while one hits the mark right on the dot? Something smells fishy.

Keep in mind that Rivian and Tesla self-certify their EPA range figures... that's where the smell's coming from. EPA did not test either vehicle.

That's funny, I find the highway assist on the i4 so much better than my R1 that I never use it with the latter.

Have you used UHF lately? The last few updates have really improved it. BMW is about as good, I guess, but Rivian's trajectory is clearly looking better.

I'm still getting this as a vehicle, I've already installed a charger and my vehicle is truly about dead. I am really disappointed in this despite people predicting it back in April.

You're going to love the R2, is the range class leading? Heck no, but there are so many other things about this vehicle that make it great . Drive well!

Anything on 70 will likely be mostly fine, but going up into eastern WY is going to be a pain. I mapped out a trip to Glendo and it will add an extra hour.

I'm in the Springs. I didn't realize you were in Colorado and that was your use case. Fwiw, I drive all over the mountains to hike and haven't had a problem with my 300ish miles of range. But I also don't usually go on the Interstate

figured I would see what my estimated range would be in my Cyberbeast based on the efficiency of my new tires and it’s 284 miles. I just drove 2.5 hours each way to service last week and it was as totally fine. Didn’t even notice the difference. I think I’ll be ok in the R2. Plus Cybertruck takes longer to charge.

EPA is 320. My lifetime average before the new tires was exactly 400 Wh/mi which comes out to 308 miles.

Why are they comparing combined city/highway range with 70 mph highway only results? That just makes the difference look worse than it already is. In reality the highway range at 60 from EPA comes out to ~299. Still a difference from their results but not “omg that’s terrible” difference.

I still want to know how the MYP beat EPA when their MY AWD test showed it 9% below EPA. What’s different about MYP now?


Out of Spec's own testing of Model Y Juniper AWD was 11.6% lower than EPA as were both 2024 Model Y tests. Seems like maybe we need multiple 70 mph tests run at different times, different places in different conditions to get a true picture.

They were comparing R2 to the best-selling vehicle in the size/class/price range at real-use driving speeds.

I expect the delta between the R2 Prem RWD Long Range and Model Y Prem RWD to be even larger than 57miles.

R2 AWD have front motor clutch disconnect while Tesla is using induction front motor on Model Y AWD. Induction motors have parasitic loss. So Model Y RWD efficiency jumps quite a bit losing that front motor.

Delta could balloon up to 70-80miles R2 RWD vs MY RWD.
