19” or 20” Wheels for R2 Standard? 🛞 🤔

I’m definitely considering getting an R2 Standard next year. Waiting on lease pricing vs. buying, lease buyout/trade-in, etc.

I’ve seen a lot of discussions about getting the 20” wheels vs. the 21” wheels due to tire availability. What do you guys think of the 19” wheels vs. the 20” wheels? Is it better to save $1,000 and go with the 19” wheels, or are the 20” wheels still the way to go because of tire availability?

Also what tires would you recommend for summer, all-season, or off-road for those sizes (19” and 20”)?

P.S. I used to drive a Honda Fit Sport and it had 16” wheels that were a real pain in the ass to find tires for. I don’t want to go down that road again if I can help it.

I'd look up the OEM tire size for both 19" and 20" and then do a search on discount tire or tirerack to see what's available in those sizes. We know, from the previous debate, there are a number of 20" tires available. If the 19" availability is similar, I'd go with that and save the money.

I think the 19s actually look better than the 20s.

Running through the configurator... there are only three colors for the standard R2!? Silver, black, and white!?

Define "better"?

According to Rivian, there's no impact on range, so in that aspect, neither is "better".

How to YOU feel about the design of each wheel? For example, my current car has 19" wheels; if I had get the 18" wheels that were offered at the time, I hated that design, so that was a deal breaker for me. You have to live with the aesthetic, so what do you prefer?

There's no way to know if the ride quality is different since no one has been able to drive the R2 with the 19" yet, so it's unclear. I would guess it's not much different.

The last aspect is cost--the 20" are $1,000 more AND when it comes time for replacement, the replacement tires will cost more on the 20" than 19"--so for your decision making, does the cheaper costs associated with the 19" make it a "better" choice?

As you live in Ohio, I would think you want all seasons. Off road tires will be harsher and louder, so if you don't plan on going off road, there's probably no benefit. Not sure what benefit you'd get to summer tires on a car like this, in this size (and there probably aren't any available anyway.....).

Both are still 32" total diameter, so the 19" vs 20" has the same ride quality debate as the LE 21" vs 20", with the 19" maybe having a slightly softer ride due to more sidewall and air cushion than the 20", but I'd wager the difference will be hard to tell, especially with equivalent tires on both.

The 19" has 8 options listed vs the 20" 13, so I think you'll be fine with either. Summer tires are probably not a good idea unless you want to swap them out at least 2x/year. If you wanted to install off-road tires, you could, but I'd probably opt for a slightly more aggressive all-season (mud+snow) tread if you don't have specific off-roading needs.

FWIW, I also think the 19" is more visually appealing than the bicarbon 20".

I see that too, but I’m definitely getting the long-range version, which has more color options.

More importantly it has 70 more miles of range. I don’t have at-home charging and I only want to charge up once a week commuting back and forth to work, like I do with my Tesla Model 3.
