For our garage.

Plenty of debates out there on this topic, you need to define your requirements first. What size circuit are you connecting too? Smart charger or not? Indoor or Outdoor.

If you have Xcel Energy for your UC, I think ChargePoint is your best option. You get an annual $50 rebate for charging overnight, and they also have a bunch of other installation rebates than you can apply for. They also have an option to do a monthly rental that includes a charger and 1,000KwH per month of free charging. Worth doing the math on all of those things to see what makes most financial sense for you.

This guy has a lot of test and ratings for EV Chargers.

I use the Emporia and Emporia Pro for home charging. Decent features, decent support, and cost effective.

There are plenty of reasonable options available on Amazon. Prices vary with features (wifi enabled, app features, etc). I'd agree that Chargepoint is a good option that has been reliable for us for 5 years without any issues.

The bigger chunk of the costs is likely how you are going to connect the charger to your electrical panel. Costs there will depend on how much you are going to use your vehicle (do you need to add 50% charge everyday or once a week)- can you get by with level 1 charging plugged into a standard 120v outlet or do you need/want a 240v level 2 hardwired into your home (r plugged into a NEMA 14). Is the capacity of your current panel able to handle adding a 60 amp breaker or do you need/want an even bigger circuit to future proof your garage in case you add a second EV down the road. Lots of variables that are individual to your use case.

Xcel has programs to mitigate some of the infrastructures costs though I think you have to agree to them having some management over your charger (time of use).

tl;dr if your garage isn't already wired, call an electrician.

I just got a ChargePoint charger. I like that they have options for both hardwired or plug in. If you get a plug-in, you can take it with you if you move.

I agree have had two wall connectors in use one for Model Y and one for R1t. Tesla has been in service for over 7 years. No issues and great tech support if you require.

I still recommend Grizzl-E products to people - well manufactured, can get smart or dumb options, NACS or J1772, price is reasonable (and lower than the Tesla or Rivian EVSEs), etc....

And the Grizzl-E Classic version is one without fancy connectivity or app control. From what I’ve read it’s a solid piece of hardware. And the advantage of having a “dumb” EVSE is simplicity and reliability—no software to debug and not reliant on the company to provide software support even if the manufacturer goes out of business. The actual charger is built into each EV. And the R1 and R2 both have internet connected control over charging and charging schedules. It’s a bit redundant to have it for the EVSE too, regardless of brand.

It's what I have, and it's been great.

For some reason they aren't offering it with a NACS plug, but in theory it would be pretty straightforward to swap a cable that does have an NACS plug on it. Or just slap a J1772 to NACS adapter onto it...

If it was me, I'd go with the Tesla Universal one or the Grizzl-E.

I've been using a Tesla V2 wall connector (quite old) for 6+ years and I have the V3 wall connector in another property we have -- both are great and both bought before the universal model came out. I'd definitely go with one of them again.

I've heard nothing but good things about Grizzl-E and they are very price-competitive.

Take a look maybe at “state of charge” on youtube.. he’s arguably the most comprehensive an legitimate tester of EV chargers.. has probably tested every single one available in NA at least, and every quarter does a “five best EV chargers” to keep it updated. Also lists deals that are available.

You didn’t mention if you have solar, and a lot of ppl prioritize the ability to always pull from the solar production when possible, as opposed to the grid, so having something that integrates directly or as an overlay to your home energy tracking is key.. otherwise you’re always shifting charging speed at the charger or vehicle to match home solar output dynamically.
