Charging at Rivian Adventure Network with Pet comfort on a hot day

I was the only one charging at a RAN with 10 spaces on a day that was about 90 degrees. I had my dogs with me so I had Pet Comfort on while we took a quick walk - came back to the vehicle to a message that the charging speed was being throttled because I had climate on while it was hot. I owned a Model Y previously for 6 years and never had charging speed throttled due to running climate in the heat. Has anyone else experienced this? Unless Rivian makes their vehicles charge faster or their RAN speeds faster, it's completely unreasonable to expect people to turn off climate on a hot day

Have not seen others complain of this. Derating is normal even under normal circumstances, as the pack is filled towards set limit. Especially under hot conditions. Every EV does it and some just don’t tell you about it. Comparing to your experience with Tesla is also not productive as the cabin space is smaller and easier to keep cool than a larger space with larger air volume. The AC has to work harder. Consequently higher energy requirement and impact on pack temp and changing curve.

Yes. We were sitting in the truck, we absolutely had to have the climate on! (And towing a trailer, and arrived with ~1%, and needed 90%+ to reach our next charge stop, so it was a *LONG* charge session.)

I’ve charged at Electrify America in 100°F with AC running, got the expected charging curve with no throttling, I did not have Pet Mode active but I was sat in truck with AC running and set to 74°F.

Haven’t run into this while towing or otherwise. I hope it’s not a “feature” of the latest software. I will say that I’m in the truck for significant amounts of time only maybe 1 out of every 4 DCFC charge sessions though.

Just made a trip from Kansas City to Montana last week. It was in the 90s and I got the same message at the RAN in Hays, KS and Flagler, CO. I don't think I got the message at the Supercharger in Evansville, WY but I'll pay more attention on the way home. I don't remember seeing this message before and have charged at RANs before in hot temps. I believe that message came with the latest update.

The message just said it was charging slower. That does not imply that you must turn off the climate control. There is only so much cooling capacity that has to cool the cabin and the battery pack. If it's hot out and you are asking for a lot of cooling for the cabin, there is less available for the battery pack. Simple as that.

As for your Tesla, do you know that it wasn't throttled? Or does Tesla just not tell you when it does?

It appears the issue was that the combined heat load of charging plus Climate Control was greater than the cooling capacity.

How do you know the Tesla did not throttle? Did it say "Not throttling due to heat and A/C"?

Rivian didn't expect you to turn the A/C off and the message did not indicate as such. The Rivian is a bigger, heavier vehicle. It inherently takes longer and more energy to charge. Rivian increasing the charge rate won't somehow solve this concern - it would make it worse.

Did you precondition before the charging stop, i.e. was it scheduled in a route plan or did you manually start preconditioning? If not, then it's on you.

My GMC will do the same thing, and it's really aggressive about it. Priority should be given to the cabin if that's what the user is asking for.
