Idiots. I'm used to tiny part number changes from every other vehicle vendor when they make a revision. But Rivian? Nah. Fuck you, that's why. I'm scheduled to have this installed in two hours, not not sure what to do.

I must be dense. I've been staring at this picture for awhile now and can't tell the difference besides maybe some subtle shade differences that look to be the result of different angles and a much "orangier" Rivian logo (that will probably fade to the yellow on your installed wheel).

The orange vs yellow is a documented design change. It's not fading. Unfortunately, I had no reason to go ask whether the colors had changed before buying a wheel, since, you know, part numbers normally MEAN SOMETHING. There's at least one other post on here from 1-2 years ago with a similar problem.

The silver is also more silvery on one, but that may not be as noticeable with lighting. But it's more noticeable in person than in a photo.

AI explanation:

Some PT00000740-D-002 Rivian 20" all‑terrain wheels have a more yellow logo tag and others look more orange because Rivian updated the wheel finish and the tag color in a running revision.
What changed
Rivian quietly revised the 20" All-Terrain Dark wheel (PT00000740-D / PT00000740-D-002), making the wheel slightly darker and less two‑tone than the earlier version.
As part of that update, the small logo/tag color was tweaked so it matches Rivian’s “compass yellow” accent more closely, which makes it appear less orange than on the older wheels.
So:
  • Earlier wheels: Tag looks more orange, and the wheel itself shows a bit more two‑tone contrast.
  • Newer wheels: Tag looks more pure yellow, tuned to compass yellow, and the wheel finish is a bit darker/more uniform.
This isn’t a functional difference; it’s just a cosmetic/branding update that happened mid‑production, so you’ll see both versions in the wild under the same part number.

The new one matches the calipers. Did those eventually change too? Dunno.

I always hated that my yellow tags didn't match the calipers.

I had downloaded the Rivian PR/media guide to get their official colors, so I could 3D print matching things. They have two yellows in the brand guide, no explanation why. Clowns.

Probably supplier change unless I missed the cage code info above. Trust me no one but you will notice. I used to be really anal about these small items and then realized no one cares.

I don't understand. Why would I give a damn what anyone but me thinks? It's my truck. That said, people have noticed. Probably 50/50 that I have to point it out. But again, it only matters if *I* care.

It sucks to read about your experience. I would care if the black metal finish is not matching, probably not about the yellow tag; it sounds like you don't have a black AT spare to swap out, so instead of staring at that wheel with dismay over the years, maybe this is your excuse to buy the matching wheel on Craigslist or eBay and put this new mismatched one in as your spare?
I hope you get her fixed up, including the body work, soon, and back to where this is a distant memory.

Before the crash, I already had a problem with a cracked wheel. I do five tire rotations so there is no dedicated spare (that would waste the life of one tire, and also can cause a mismatch issue if put into service). So this is the replacement for the cracked one. On top of that, the crash has either damaged the wheel that hit, or damaged the drivetrain/suspension. While I wait for Rivian to get ready for repairs, I was hoping that putting in a new wheel would answer the question. The person who hit me has low insurance; if there's major damage, it's a much bigger shitshow. If it's just the wheel, that's a huge relief. Just didn't need this one more bit of bullshit when trying to get that answer, but the universe didn't want to help me this week.

I'm going to have it installed today. I'll either get over it, or eventually find another one. This was from an eBay wheel sales specialty store with good reviews. The seller specifically told me I'd get the right one, and lied. Do I force a return? That puts off my ability to see if there's a suspension issue or not.

Again, just more shit and questions to solve.

He said I'd get this:

The alternative is $1200 from Rivian. This was $500.

Technically, thats on the ebay seller for misrepresenting the item delivered. kind of sucks. I would contact them prior to installation. $0.01

Of course, as I said, they lied. It's also stupid how Rivian changed things without a number, which means, if you need orange, how do you get it from Rivian??? I'm going to install it. I have enough stress in life right now, and answering whether the suspension/drivetrain is going to turn this into a huge problem is important.

If I can't get over it, then it becomes a "later" problem.

Ahh, that is salt in the wound. I understand your desire to just get on the road, move on, and not deal with fighting an eBay seller. That is BS seller deception on their part, but it doesn't guarantee that getting a refund won't be a month-long pain in the rear.

I thought you might be one of those 5 wheel rotators. I rotate 4 wheels and admit that I'm probably missing out on some advantages of including my spare in the rotation. Hope you can clear this from your mental cache soon.
