Explain how converting kinetic energy to electrical energy is more efficient than using that energy to keep the car moving forward. If you can do that, then you're next in line to buy my perpetual motion machine.
I take it you didn't read what I wrote in #131. Because if you understood that, you wouldn't be mischaracterizing what I said.

I actually have a PhD in Physics. So yes I could teach you, but like Kelis I would have to charge...

Speaking of Audi!

The guy next door has an R1S (Rivian related content ... he mentioned kind of wanting to wait for an R2 but had to pull the trigger like a year ago) and he rolled his tuned RS6 out the other day, very nice!

I'm not mischaracterizing, I'm asking for clarification.

The premise here is that you always have to feed some energy into an electric motor, even to maintain the illusion of a what we describe as a "coast". In that regard, a complete decouple and true "roll without power" will be more efficient than a constant feed into a motor to maintain speed, or even a slight linear decrease in speed.

This, admittedly, is slightly different from my smartass "explain why conversion wouldn't have losses" comment, but the premise stands.

If you want to compare braking to regen; sure capturing some of the energy instead of wasting to heat is more efficient, however in the reference frame of coasting we're in here, it's not.

Neat. I have a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 15yrs of industrial machine design experience. I've worked with some "I actually have a PhD in Physics" guys before......I'll sit by for the incoming "education", this should be entertaining.

**EDIT**

Just went and listened to Kelis-Change. Had to google what that reference was. Music isn't my cup of tea, but not bad. Appreciate the exposure there.

**EDIT X2** - Just reread, and I see you said "Charge", not "Change".....which is hilarious that she also has a song named "Change". Fun misread there on my part. Please rest assured though, I won't be paying for whatever physics milkshake you think you have that's worth charging for.......Now that I get the reference.

The coasting argument is stupid.

Coasting in a ICEV makes sense because you disconnect the engine from the transmission, so it idles and uses very little fuel. It is a good way to hypermile if that is your thing. It isn't my thing.

I agree with @VSG - coasting is not more efficient in a BEV.

Disconnecting the electric motors provides very little, if any, benefit because don't need to disconnect the motors for the motors to use little or no energy. And in reality, coasting is slowing down, and BEVs can capture that energy from slowing. And can you really coast to a stop without using brakes? Not in normal driving. The distance needed to stop is much shorter than you can coast.

Anyway, this is stupid and I can't believe I continue to add to the stupidity.

I would kill (literally) for an RS6. Lucky guy.

I read that it’s not possible to turn off 1 pedal driving mode in the R2. Can anyone confirm this is true?

I absolutely cannot stand 1 pedal driving. I had a Nissan Ariya and it had an eStep mode I think it was called which is 1 pedal driving and it was horrible. When I let off the pedal it was the feeling of like instantly downshifting 3 gears in a gas car.

Why oh why would they not make this an option you can disable on the R2?
It has significant efficiency benefits and it is not not hard to master once you understand how to taper your foot pressure on the single pedal for easy smooth control.

Just picked up my new R1T Tri this morning. I believe it took about one block to adjust to the one pedal driving setup. I really like it - seems better than our BMW I4’s 1 pedal functionality (though that has the optional 2 pedal setup).

It's really beautiful, sounds amazing, almost ... ALMOST ... pushes me to go CE one more time (like the insane M3 Comp X at the dealer a few months ago, wife said, sure, I don't care, but I don't think that's my jam anymore).
