I played with the R2's radio a bit during my test drive. While it seemed nearly as responsive as traditional radio, having to sit through 30 seconds of ads on most stations when first tuning in would hinder the ability to channel surf. It does seem that once you've heard the ads once, you can tune off and back to a station without additional ads.

Lol, I see that every time I go to a large family gathering on a Sunday nowadays. It's like practically no one under the age of 40 watches sports for the love of the game, it's almost always gambling related

Honestly this topic is way overblown at 29 pages currently. I listen to a lot of AM radio and was pleasantly surprised how well it sounded in the r2 compared to my car with an antennae.

Well yeah, you were streaming AM, you can't compare digital streaming to terrestrial AM radio reception which is subject to all sorts of natural and man made EM interference.

Having TuneIn should resolve the public radio stations. It does in NY. But I spend time in the mountains. This means in between service areas, we have to rely on Downloads. Not ideal

How is forcing lead-in advertising with every turn on and station change resolving the issue? An actual FM radio with HD has no such ads, higher quality, and no drop outs due to poor cell coverage.

Not sure what was going on, but I tuned in my local NPR station in TuneIn, waded through the 30 seconds or so of commercials, and then got a stream that was not the same as what was playing on an actual FM radio tuned to the same station. It was the station with the same local hosts, but the stream was off at least 15 minutes, and might have been much more (I gave up trying to figure out what was going on). We are in the middle of a major monsoon season now with frequent thunderstorms and flash floods, and I really don't want emergency broadcast notices coming in long after they have already expired.

iHeart and TuneIn only resolves the problem of wanting to keep on a station when traveling out of range of that station. It's great for that.

In my experience the delays are a minute or less for iHeart radio and tune-in.

I base that on the time announcements coming from several stations while I listen over the streaming services. Been using these streaming services for years in my EVs.

I do carry an emergency am/fm radio in my vehicles just in case.

I don’t think he means terrestrial radio is ad free but that when you tune in, there aren’t the “lead in” ads before you even hear any broadcast. As someone who lives and drives in areas where service is often spotty — prone to flash floods, squalls and emergency weather announcements as well — I wish Rivian had kept the radio so I won’t need to keep a windup in the car (if I decide on the R2).
