Anyone have R2 highway driving range to share? (I'm sure the color you picked looks great)

A key fact that maybe your wife isn't considering: Draw your line out four hours. Now, where are the chargers along that route? She can't look at it like gas, meaning, fill it to full, drive it to empty, and then hit another gas station. Even if there WERE a charging station at four hours out, does she then understand how long you'll be sitting at, and the premium you'll be paying for, a 0-100% charge?

My wife made it clear our next EV needs to have around 4 hours driving time at 75 mph. I know the R2 won't get that but if it can go almost 3.5 hours on 100-10% charge I might be able to convince her. Any one have any efficiency numbers for highway driving at a specific speed they'd be willing to share? Showing her nice colors of R2s won't get me anywhere.
Not sure which part to be jealous of.

The wife with a 4 hour bladder or 300 miles of open road that you can drive at 75mph.

In any case that will require an EV with 400-500 miles of range if you want to do it every year of the month.

The man asked a reasonable question. Has anyone who has taken delivery of there new R2 driven at Interstate highway speed overs sustained period to give everyone a real world sense of actual range. He really did not ask how long we can hold our bladder.
Thanks,
I've actually had EVs as my main vehicle for almost 9 years but my wife only rarely driven mine. When I rarely drive hers, I realize what a pain it is to stop and get gas vs charging at home. I'm more willing to stop and charge on road trips as a tradeoff. On a road trip if you get 275 mile before the first charge then 225 on the next charge to 80%, then that's usually going to be a day of driving and can charge fully on a Level 2 overnight. We do take road trips frequently. Last several years we spend January in the Florida Keys and stop to see family on the way.. She's already been up to Northern Montana and back last month. She likes to take her dog along everywhere. My wife used to be totally noninvolved in finances and vehicle selection. Now that she's semiretired she's too involved with both without my knowledge of either. We take an ICE vehicles on all 600 mile plus road trips together currently. I'm just trying to collect some data to make a case for the R2- the next EV I want. If she just went back to work, none of this would be an issue.

There's only one person in the entire forum who as identified themselves as having taken delivery. It's way too early to crowd source data. https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/my-r2-delivered-vin-0686-first-photo-📸.59995/

I assume from the lack of a link or an answer indicating that they've tested it that no-one has, or is aware of someone testing it. As @UnsungZero_OldTimeAdMan said, very few have taken deliveries.

That being said, we can provide, and have provided advice as current EV owners of vehicles that are advertised as having 330-ish miles of range on what OP can expect.

The stated range of the R2 was achieved under a very specific set of circumstances Rivian tested at and was achieved going from 100% to 0% You aren't going to go much lower than 10% on a road trip, so that puts you at 310.5 miles right there. Then, speed is a factor. That 310.5 miles of range is at a variety of speeds. At 75mph the air resistance is significant and reduces range. Then, if the outside temperature causes the car to have to spend energy heating or cooling the cabin, if the wind is unfavorable, or if the elevation changes are against her, that will significantly eat into the range.

AND Perhaps more importantly - as someone else on the thread explained - because of the way DCFC works, you don't charge to 100% because the charge time between 80 and 100% is VERY SLOW - so you want to stop charging at like 70 or 80% and, as mentioned before, you don't ever go to zero %. So generally during the trip you are staying between 10%-70% So 60% of 345 is 207 miles @ 75mph is 2.76 hours under ideal conditions after the first stop.

So the answer is quite literally - On the first charge - starting from 100% - maybe (it depends) - but on subsequent stops - Not likely.

I get that some people drive faster, but I regularly get 340 miles on my 2022 R1T quad driving mostly highway miles 70 miles an hour in conserve mode, with maybe 15% of lower speed driving at the beginning and end of the trip (as long as temps are moderate). I just did that last week, and was watching the trip mileage closely. I think people don't realize how much more juice it takes to go 75+ mph and are probably doing a lot of excessive accelerating when they say they are only getting 80% of EPA range.

The difference between 65 mph and 75 mph is huge for range like you said. You aren’t getting more than ~250 miles on the R2 going 75mph+ unless you’re in IDEAL conditions, weather, elevation, road, cargo, tires, etc.

Selling point - does she know about dog mode? You said she likes to take the dog everywhere.

I was once someone not very interested in EVs but my first hearing of dog mode was one of the things that made me reconsider my opinion. We love our dog and take him everywhere. Dog mode wasn't a deciding factor to make me go Rivian, but it was a definitely one of the bigger points made.

Basically you're asking for 300 mi range at 75 mph.

Porsche Cayenne Electric has been tested to achieve 350 miles range at 70 mph which equates to ~310 miles at 75 mph. So there's your 4 hours. Look at this calculator.

What really should be considered is the combo of range and charge speed. What if over 4 hours you could charge once and travel even further than 300 miles? Take a small break and get to your destination faster. This is where things are headed with ever increasing charge speeds. This calculator will allow you to add a charging stop.

I'm not pushing the Porsche even though I have one on order. They're terribly expensive and the dealer service is criminal. I bought one because I'm willing to get screwed for the sporty handling.

Send her back to work and buy the R2 you want :CWL:

And then she meets someone at work, falls in love, wants a divorce and takes half of everything (and the dog).

When I was a kid, I once drove from Virginia to Vermont almost non-stop (except for gas, and a flat tire repair). Same thing with a crazy mid-winter drive to Wisconsin - I think I made it in 19 hours? Now that I'm old, anything more than two hours without stopping feels like torture. 😆 These solid points and more have been beat to death already.

I'd just add that if you normally charge at home and you're only "road tripping" a couple times a year, rent a gas car for those trips. Or fly. You could afford it, with all the money you saved at home the other 364 days of the year. Safe travels!

Believe me I've tried to get her to go back to work. Unfortunately in the past she had a health issue that was 100% stress related at her job. She's fine now but is afraid of a reoccurrence. Plus just recently she got interested in our finances for the first time ever. I did way too good of job investing and she knows will never spend all that money.
