Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
RJ spoke with Road & Track about Rivian, EVs in general, the R2, etc. The usual spiel, but he also brought up the R2/R3 variants again and R4/R5. See below.

“In Georgia we have a few variants,” said Scaringe. “So there’s R2, there’s R3, there’s a number of variants we haven’t hinted at or alluded to — R3X, you’ve seen R3X, you can use your imaginations. There’s gonna be other things on R2 and R3 to come, and then, of course, there's R4 and R5, which we haven’t shown yet. [Chief design officer] Jeff [Hammoud] wanted to show them today, but I told him no. He doesn’t like when I talk about R4 or R5.”

I hope he doesn’t Osborne the R2/R3 with talk of the R4/R5. People will put off buying something if they know something else is around the corner, even if it’s something that they don’t ultimately want. Too much speculation, information, and choice can cause decision paralysis. There are already enough R2 trims to choose from. Everything else Rivian does should be in secret until it’s ready to be reserved and sold. Revealing everything years in advance is never a good idea.

What do you all think?

If the R2 is as successful as it's supposed to be, showing other variants shouldn't pull away from anything. It'll just be different strokes for different folks.

Anything beyond R3 is likely three or more years away. Anyone serious about buying the R2 aren't going to wait that long.

I want him to talk about Gen 3 R1 but that would be a serious Osborne. During my R2 test drive I talked to a guy from whom we have bought three Rivians and told him I would wait for the new tech package before doing anything and he asked why I would not just get the new R1 then. Good question I said and we may but thinking about going smaller.

Make of that what you will.

My answer would be, size and price is why I won't get a gen 3 R1.

Based on size trend, R4 will be a golf cart, R5 an electric scooter. R6 will be a pair of heelie shoes with batteries.
On a serious note, I expect a subcompact and a roadster in one of the Rs. Maybe a pure practical and functional car for people just need to get to work or school everyday and can't afford a $30K+ car.
About a 30% of Americans make less than $30K. The choice is to buy used or let the Chinese cars take over. Chinese cars will own %30 of the market outside the US because of affordability.

R2 ordered…but hits of a R4 and 5…. Well I might as cancel my R2 order and wait for the latest and greatest R5. But that means the R7 would be right around the corner. Ok. I’ll hold off til the R8.

I think people spend entirely too much time speculating about things outside their sphere of influence. 😁

I think anyone that puts off a purchase of an R2 based on what will be the R3/R4/R5 years from now either 1) Doesn't really want one anyway; 2) Can't afford one; 3) Believes in waiting for the next computer that the tech bros promise is just around the corner will solve all their problems - so they'll just live with what they have and wait for the next tech advance.

Remember, they estimate 2026 production at 20k vehicles. Do you really think you understand their demand better than they do?

I didn’t say I did, but demand paralysis is a real thing. There’s a reason Tesla has sold so many vehicles and that the Model Y is the most sold vehicle in the world, like it or not.

I hope the R2 becomes equally successful, if not more so. I believe in strategic clarity. Unfortunately I think Tesla is moving in the wrong direction and the fact that they’ve given up sustainability to chase AI and greed is disheartening. Hopefully Rivian carries the sustainability torch forward.

So, RJ, food for thought. For the R2T & R3T, the R1T is big where it needs to be small and small where it needs to be big. How about designing something more... functional? More of an urban pick-up truck.
  • 7' bed that can carry a piece of plywood when the tailgate is down
  • Shorter cab; instead of a gear tunnel, side hatches open to the space behind the drivers seat. <or> gear tunnel roof serves as an in-cab shelf.
  • 3 seats via a front bench seat, or two seat configuration as the R1T currently has.
  • Rear window that can open or be lowered

That’s all the exact opposite of what I, and my Rivian owning friends wanted. The legacy companies probably make that.

Today I was marveling at how perfect the R1T is for what I need. I did a little triathlon training and between activities I used the gear tunnel door to set my sweaty ass on while I changed shoes. And as I was swimming and running, my bike was safely secured in the bed with the cable lock. So freaking awesome, dude. And it fits in my garage. Just barely. 😂 It's my first pick up truck, but it couldn't be more perfect for my needs.

And it is perfect for this also:
