Hello,

I am new to EVs and currently have a reservation for the R2. I was thinking about getting the coastal cloud signature but a little apprehensive and not sure if I should get the darker black crater. It’s just my husband and I however I am worried it may get dirty and not hold up over time. Can anyone tell me how their R1S or R1T has held up that have the lighter ocean coast interior and if there are any regrets. Is the lighter interior easy to clean and is there something to buy to clean it or some type of professional service that can put some type of protection on the interior when you first purchase. Any advice, tips or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!!

I wouldn't worry about it. They are both easy to clean. IMO - the "white" interior looks cleaner than the darker one. It is not white, it is more of a stone gray. It is a misconception that dark colors hold up to dirt better. I have found the opposite to be true.

I bought a used R1S and had it for two years with the ocean coast interior. Interior looked new when I bought it and it looked the same when I sold it. They hold up well. Not much in the way of cracking and just about 0 stains. The headliner might be more difficult but even then - still manageable, specially without kids.

IMO - this is the way to go. The ocean coast interior makes it look more upscale and unique with no real downside outside of cost. If that is what you want, go for it. I would not let cleanability and durability be a deterrent - it does well on both.

Depends 100% on your use and care. Lots will tell you to go ahead. But there are also posts of people asking about how to remove stains. The material may be engineered to be stain-resistant, but that isn’t the same as stain-proof. Hardly anything is actually stain-proof. Even stainless steel can stain, if the contaminant is strong enough to affect it on a chemical level. Same goes for dark interior. Just less contrast and harder to see stains.

From someone who has had black interiors for a long time now, I miss my light grey 2016 Hyundai Sonata interior. That was so nice looking back now! My R2 will without a doubt have the light grey coastal cloud interior. Black interiors actually show a lot of crap and are so hot inside.

There are many, many threads here that discuss this, but it all comes down to personal preference IMO.
  • Dark isn't any more dirt-resistant than light.
  • Dark isn't easier to clean than light.
  • Yes dirt will be more visible on the light interior, but that's a good thing isn't it? With the dark interior you won't see the dirt so it will stay dirty (out of sight out of mind). I don't want that, I want a clean interior.
  • Dark absorbs heat better than light, so if you live in a very sunny place you might want to consider that.
  • Dark to me looks "cheaper" than light.
  • Light to me feels airy and open - it makes the space feels larger. Dark to me feels confined and constricted and smaller.
  • It's easier to find things with a light interior. Try finding your black gloves on the back seat or floor under low light conditions with a dark interior ... Or your black phone ...
Is it obvious my preference is a light interior? Others have the opposite preference. My R1T is 4 years old with an Ocean Coast (light) interior. My main use is camping and outdoors activities. With dog. I also use the truck as a truck, hauling around tools and materials in the bed and driving home in my dirty work clothes. My interior still looks brand new, and I don't need to take any special care to keep it looking that way.

So buy the interior you like the best, but I think when people ask this question what they really mean is that they like the light interior better but are worried that it won't be as durable and won't keep looks good for long.

My experience says don't worry - the light interior isn't fragile and won't get trashed easily, so if you like it then buy it and enjoy it and don't second guess yourself.

I have the Ocean Coast (or whatever the R1 version is. And I love it. Makes the cabin look and feel more light and airy. As for upkeep, no complaints. I volunteer and my local shelter and I’ll 5/6 or so dogs each weekend (over the last 2 years) to events and other than slobber on the insides of the glass (and hair, so much hair) my interior looks as good as the day I took it home. Mud and grime just wipe off.

I like the light interior, but I will say that in a previous non-Rivian vehicle that had a cream interior, I could see some blue staining on the driver's seat from my jeans after a while. It did come off, but I had never noticed it in my black interiors.

I have Ocean Coast in my 2025 R1S. Here it is after 15 months with three kids and two dogs.

We have the Ocean Coast interior, 2 kids, and a weimaraner. After 8 months it still looks great. I love it. I'm buying a tri motor R1T this year if they bring back the Ocean Coast interior. Stupid Rivian offers less options for the more expensive model.

Did you even watch the video? I just watched it on 2x, and it is TOTALLY appropriate for the question asked in the OP. He showed the before, pointed out the problem areas, and talked about what he was doing along the way.

I'm picking the Coastal Cloud interior as well, and this is exactly the kind of content that I want to see about the experience of owning a similar light-colored interior from Rivian. It's one thing to read about people's experiences, but seeing real-life visuals is more impactful, IMHO.

Very good question. The white interior will definitely require regular cleaning and maintenance, especially if you use the vehicle for it's intended purposes. Products are available, but I prefer not to need to do so. I have a 2025 tri-motor R1S. I spared no expense, but purposely went with the dark interior for exactly that reason.

I hope you love your Rivian as much as I love mine. Adventure on!
