Am I the only one on the struggle bus on how to tell the difference between an R1 and an R1S?!?!

I know they are physically sized differently, however in pictures online the scale is hard to grasp. The styling is so similar I really struggle to tell what's what.

Side: R1S has badge on the C-pillar (behind rear door), R2 does not.
Rear: R1S has license plate on the drop gate. R2 has it on the bumper.
Front: R1 has 5 segment headlights, R2 has 3.

That is mostly intentional. I believe Rivian didn’t want to stray too far away from the successful R1S. The scale is exposed when you look at both vehicles from the rear window (side and rear). Also height which is not as easy to tell via online pics.

I also struggle. I always look for the badge on the C pillar. Quick and easy way to tell.

Oh, I totally get why. Branding and imaging is completely justified and clearly on purpose. No issues there. Wish the people that called the '06-'08 GTO a "Glorified Grand Prix" had this same sensibility about branding and styling.

I'm just seriously on the struggle bus with my own ability to discern the differences without scale as a reference.

I feel the opposite. Specially from behind, I can tell them apart right away. The R2 is a little more cartoony upfront and more squared off around back. Honestly, has made me appreciate how good the R1 looks in comparison. Only in comparison though. The R2 looks good on its own.

Can also confirm the Old Orchard location has 2 in the colors mentioned. The blue looks better in person than online. There were a decent number of people there when I got there so it was hard for me to take pictures. A few of the blue one are below.

It's a decent sized vehicle. Smaller than the R1S, but still a pretty good size. I wish they had an R1S there for comparison.

Haha. The video of RJ driving the first production unit off the line picked up the horn well, have a listen.

Thanks again - I had watched the video with the sound off and didn't pick that up. The horn sounded about the same as the R1 single horn: Pathetic. Loud enough inside, but I'd prefer something that a driver will hear over their car stereo on the interstate.

Hopefully @RealWheelsEV will come out with a dual-horn kit for the R2 as well.

Additionally, the rear door windows are different. R1S has a vertical bar, splitting the window, R2 does not.

Per Reddit there is only one R2 at the Rush (downtown) location (the one pictured in the original post) and two at the Old Orchard (burbs) location and those are Catalina Cove and Midnight. Haven't seen any pictures from the Old Orchard location yet to confirm though.

I went to Old Orchard. There are indeed 2 R2s there in Catalina and Midnight.

All I can say is take my money!

I'm 6'5 and I had more than enough room in the front and back (although I did not sit behind myself). I picked up a cool R2 shirt too. We were there towards the end of the night so, I was able to spend a decent amount of time playing around. They even let me connect to Bluetooth to check out the stereo (although I wasn't able to turn it up too loud). The stereo sounds decent.

I really like Catalina Cove, but still leaning towards Launch Green if I'm one of the chosen ones.

I also asked if the R1 crossbars (since they are currently on sale in the Gear Shop) would fit on the R2 and was told no, they would not.

Awesome! I appreciate the intel. I RSVP'd to go at the end of the day Saturday to check it out. I'm also leaning towards Launch Green but with everyone raving about Catalina Cove it'll be nice to see that in person.

The grille opening on R1 is above the bumper whereas it is below the bumper on R2. That's another quick tell from the front
