From Instagram. This looks to be the 21" option, 255/55R21. Pirelli Scorpion MS Elect. Visible is the "outside" marking—asymmetrical tread.

I don't believe many people familiar with the industry genuinely expected them to roll out the base level / price model on day 1 of the launch.

I could be wrong and of course can't speak for everyone, but I have to believe that most people interested in a vehicle like this have seen enough of the market to know that the release of lower priced, mass produced vehicles tend to start with higher priced launch / limited edition trims while production ramps, with the goal of getting production high enough to introduce lower priced models a year or two later.

Again, not saying that there weren't people off the street who genuinely expected a day 1 model at $45k because I'm sure there are people in that camp, but at the same time I just don't believe that was the majority view going into the announcement and subsequent launch.

Technically, parts of June are still in the Spring.
In fact, *most* of June is still in the Spring. June 20, 11:59:59PM.. first R2 delivered. 😂

No, but 1.5 years after launch is an excessive delay. If I was shopping for a $45k R2 I would have moved on by then.

Yup. No one rolls out base trim first. And all OEMs lead advertising with starting base price while showing images of high trim (i.e. "best foot forward")—common practice and allowed under existing and long-standing FCC rules. And the messaging has always been starting price of $45k. The "starting" part was never about timing, but where price range starts. And the base trim target price is still $45k, RWD with 265 mi range. Anyone wanting to point fingers, find a mirror.

That said, pending how things develop... There's always a chance the $45k base model could get canceled—notably missing from today's coverage—pending cost of batteries, parts and tariffs. Want an easy example? Tesla's much rumored and stillborn $35k Model 3. Business conditions are not constant (especially when trade policies are as unstable as the govt. making them). Business plans change with it. Can't really say "bait and switch" when no money is risked. Reservations are refundable.

While graphics may be interpreted in various ways, the intent of this graphic is to show the difference between the original expectation set by Rivian and the revised expectation, and to suggest that Rivian's action is akin to "bait & switch."
