Fine Tuning a Sturdy Sea Kayak Rack for R1T

We have gone through a steady evolution of small modifications to create a truly solid base for hauling longer sea kayaks (and other large equipment) on our R1T. depending on the situation, we can likely carry three and potentially four 18-foot sea kayaks on this rack.

Always nice to see sea kayaks on Rivians! What is your loading strategy? I use Yakima Showdowns on my R1S but that means I can only have 2 boats up there. The ability to load from the side and at waist height makes up for it but would love something else that was as easy to load but allowed for more boats.

I need a set of tall towers for the rear of my R1T for carrying long lumber. Need the rear racks to be same height as racks on the cab. I can not find those racks on the yakima site. How did you modify to fit the rear rails?

I just got a cheap adjustable rack off Amazon and used some u bolts to attach to the factory crossbar lugs.

any one use the Range Industries Mariner Bed rack... seems pretty nice. is the bed rack level with the front cab racks?

You are telling me you are an affluent ‘elitist’ with that comment! Haha! One of my kayaking buddies is picking up his new Sterling Grand Illusion in a couple weeks in Bellingham. I have to be sure that my rack can handle that trip AND future adventures with two overly expensive Sterling boats on top before we head out on any trips. Hence the very beefy design!

So far we’ve only produced two sets. The guy who designed it has it on his truck down in California. He loaned me the 3-D plans which I had manufactured by a small company in Yakima, WA. We really need to establish a decent number of orders to justify the cost of producing them in large numbers. If you don’t mind forwarding your information to me I can get you on our list of a dozen people or so who are interested. Tom

If you're still adding names to the list, I am very interested in this rack setup. I've got an adapted Mars Adventure gear mount adapter+HD track for my Overhaul but would love to have a setup like this for the additional security. Looks great!
