It should be noted that he completely ignored that I was asking for Gen 1 to get basic lane centering. This reply, while nice, confirms Driver+ will never be good.
To be fair, Gen1 was always limited to Mobileye EyeQ4 Mid, and there was never a realistic expectation that this would change. VW’s ID.Drive on the ID.3/4 uses the same sensor and camera stack and offers some lane assist features (with steering nudges rather than the more conservative 'ding' Rivian provides), but there it does not reach the minimal-supervision behavior of Gen1 highway assist, where mapped roads are used to ensure smooth curvature and conditions within the specified control limitations.

https://www.vw.com/en/iq-drive/lane-assist.html

Whether Rivian’s explanation as to why they moved on from gen1 ADAS is generous framing or strict technical truth is debatable, but the conclusion is unambiguous. They decided they could not extract more capability from the Gen1 ADAS architecture. Whether the constraint was technical, such as latency, or commercial is largely irrelevant now. Driver+ has been effectively 'complete' for about a year.

Frankly, the fact that Rivian is willing to return to Gen1 at all is a positive signal. It was starting to look like Gen1 would be abandoned entirely. I would rather see Rivian deliver what is feasible than overextend and risk the company. Gen1 ADAS is simply the hill they have chosen not to die on.

Just saw this online. Woot woot!!!

"Launch mode is coming to Gen 1 Quad and Dual Performance early next year. Messaging support will come through the Al Assistant deep end-to-end integration. Thanks for highlighting the HVAC setting, that is a bug and it must be fixed.

And as a bonus :), we are also adding Apple Watch support for Gen 1 with Active entry only (no passive unlock like UWB-enabled Gen2), and it will be available early next year."
Does this mean I can drive my Gen1 with only my watch and no phone? 🤞

No. It says active entry only
Maybe. Maybe not. It depends on whether they are releasing a watchOS app to utilize the Watch's bluetooth. An unlock command sent from Apple Watch app, via Bluetooth, is still active entry. If they are, you would still want to carry a keycard as backup. Proximity triggered unlock is passive entry.

Cars 20 years go, and others using low grade mobilEye (Subaru) without the added sensors Rivian has, can do basic lane centering/ lane keep assist. I'm willing to die in the hill that they can do that at a minimum... And accept they lied to use pre-order holders.

But I'll end up just getting a comma AI after this battle

If, as Rivian says, it’s only for active entry, theeeen what‘s the point? Personally, I want to be able to use my Apple Watch to drive (with no phone present). As it is, I always carry my fob, so phone or no phone, the truck will always unlock/lock and drive. Honestly, I, long ago, gave up on the WAAK ever being fully functional in my Gen 1.

And I never carry my fob (unless it is going in for service). My phone has always been perfect with it. Wife’s too, so good we don’t even think about it.

If not stand-alone, then it's another option. One that doesn't require you to fish phone out of your pocket or bag/briefcase. As all options, if you don't need it, don't use it. But it's there if and when you choose to use it. And, phone is potentially a both hands operation. Watch, you only need one free finger.

If it only unlocks the vehicle but doesn’t permit driving then I’d hide a keycard in the vehicle so the watch gets me in and the card lets me drive.

Hopefully the watch active entry will also permit the vehicle to be driven so no hidden backup card will be needed.
