Mostly because I traded my 24’ quad R1T in on a new 24’ Silverado EV RST. 😆

Sorry I had to. I miss my R1T and won’t rehash why I traded it in. In short for me, Service and Customer Service.

So, why am I here? Well, for one the Silverado forums are boring, 😂 and I’m still rooting for Rivian. I’d like to be back one day.

The 2nd reason is I planned a trip to Thailand back in April for my 50th bday in November, which I’m currently on. When I planned the trip my R1T would see 1-2% vampire drain. So I was going to be parking it at my sisters with plans to use 120v charge to hold at 70%. Not huge deal but the whole time I owned the truck I used Electrifi to track my daily usage and what not. Where is that 1-2% going. My assumption has always been gear guard, a cool feature that I never felt was all it should be.

Well the Silverado. That thing gains powee when sitting. I’ve noticed on long drives after stopping it does some sort of calibrating and almost eveyrime it bumps up 1-2% I’m thinking battery temp possibly. Ive had the Silverado for 2 months now and it has not lost any power that I can see while sitting for a day or two. It’s been parked at my cousins house(no worries about plugging in, better parking than my sisters) it was at 76% when I parked it after a 2 hour drive from home. Later that night Ibsawbit had bumped up to 78%. My cousin drove it around his neighborhood to try it out(sadly he never got to drive the Rivian) and it still has 78% as I check it from Thailand 9 days into my trip.

I’m renting a Toyota Revo Hilux 4x4 Diesel so I can photograph some more remote parts of Thailand. It looks like it could be an off road machine, but has street tires. 😂 I’m staying in Pattaya and I ventured into more dense urban areas and that was white knuckle. Damn scooters buzzing around you, driving on the left sitting on the right. I’ve smacked 2 side view mirrors so far. I’ve read it happens a lot, just keep driving. There are no lines in the road most places. The freeways are like us freeways. It’s inner city where it gets nuts, and the rural where I’m heading I have to watch out for wrong side drivers among other hazards.

Had this as a rental while my Rivian was at the shop. LOVED the range. I couldn't kill it no matter how much I drove it around. Unfortunately, don't have much praises beyond that. It is a behemoth for sure and when we got my R1S back, my wife (who is not a car person) was probably more excited than me to be back in it. A smaller form factor from Chevy, like a Colorado EV, would be very interesting though. Too bad it seems like they aren't pulling too much stock in their future EV projects. Glad you're enjoying it though!

No vampire drain is nice. My wife's Mach-E is similar. Waste like 0 battery when not in use. It just works too (no weird glitches or needing to reboot), which is how I felt about the Silverado when I had it, so that was another plus.

One more thing very much not on the plus side. The chime that GM EVs have when you leave the driver door open...that is a special kind of hell.

Yeah, it’s more in line with 1/2 ton(despite its weight just under 9k) I came from 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks so I’m use to that already. The R1T took some getting use to for me. I had a Silverado EV WT(work truck trim) from enterprise for one service appt. was not impressed. Mine is the RST “1st Edition” right at the end of September there were still quite a few 24’s. MSRP was $96K but I got it for $75k. It is no where as nimble as the R1T but it had a “Sport” mode that unlocks all 760HP and it really moves. I love the mid gate feature and the multi function tailgate. At 100% it shows 455 miles of range. I drove up to Seattle from Oregon twice in the first 2 weeks I had it, 250 miles, arrived with 46% left. With the 350kw charging I did a 26 minute charge and got home. It gets better range in my daily driving at 1.9kw/m vs the 1,6kw/m. I did drive the R1T is sport and every freeway entrance was a “can I hit 90 before I get to the end of the on ramp”. I don’t feel that urge as much in the bigger SEV it has a bit of a torque steer when you punch it, but it goes and I’ve not had issue wrangling it. It is setup for V2H but GM’s system is spendy, and I can’t remember the last time I lost power. I did use the 30amp, 240v outlet to power my travel trailer. No problem running the AC. My travel trailer is a Geo Pro, setup for off road/off grid it has 800 watts of solar and everything but micro and ac are 12v. So the truck could power for days. I’m digging it so far. PDX was the closest SC for me 2 hours away. Never thought that would be big deal. Chevy is starting to roll out OTA updates but I took it to my local Chevy dealer 3 miles from my house and dropped it off in the morning on the way to work for a huge dealer applied update that unlocked lots of new stuff(side view camera with turn signals, chrome browser, and lots of streaming apps. Sidewinder(crab walk on Hummer EV), which is weird. Chevy is also all about towing I bought a wired trailer camera from the dealer that make the trailer “invisible” in the center screen and digital rear view mirror. Basically uses all the truck cameras and the wired trailer camera to disappear trailer and places guidelines where your trailer is. You have to enter all the dimensions of the trailer but it basically uses that to extend the sensors like Blind Spot taking into account the length of trailer. My 22’ Tundra did that and it was nice. Ok, I’ll stop babbling on.

I sure hope Rivian gets VD down to almost zero kWh/day on the R2!
Regardless of what the fanbois say, it can be done. We currently have four vehicles with J1772 plugs, let them all sit for a week.. close to zero miles range lost on any of them, and they are all "connected vehicles" where you can remote climate condition, etc.. If I add in the Bolt I previously had, that makes 5 vehicles I've personally owned with close to zero VD.

I hope Rivian doesn't look at VD in the R2 (which is a clean slate design) and just brush it off like it's another CP/AA "wish-list" request that's only important to a handful of zealots.

Congrats on the new truck, keep the info coming. I like the looks of the Sierra and the midgate and multi function tailgate just was not sure on the daily efficiency but if you are getting close to 2kw then not really much difference in real world usage compared to what I see in the R1T.

Might actually be more efficient if I calculate the 1-2% VD loss into the efficiency of the R1T. That's close 300-700kw a year, at my 32 cents a kw rate that adds up to a not so insignificant amount.

Draining 1% of my battery while sitting for 24 hours makes zero impact on my life.
Sure, and I think it doesn't impact most people.

But some others are getting up to 5% and there's something wonky there. It can cause issues when you are traveling/parked somewhere, often without charging. We all know bad things happen when the vehicle is completely drained.

Please babble on! Always nice to hear ownership experience of different vehicles. My rental was the most basic trim, black on black, zero options, which was very utilitarian but not very exciting to look at or be in. I had it for about 2 weeks (speaking of service issues with Rivian) and really got to know it by putting almost 1,000 miles in that time. While I didn't love driving it per se (the torque steer made the vehicle feel not as composed, so I wasn't driving it like a mad man...which is how I normally drive), it was nice to drive all over town and still have 300-400 miles left, even at like 60% battery. I don't think I've ever driven a truck of that size, so that took getting used to as well. I actually thought about looking at the Sierra EV, but I don't think it fits my use case but I would be interested to see what the Silverado looks like in the higher trims. I didn't dismiss it outright, but can't say I loved my experience either but can partly fault the most base trim for that.

IMO, GM had a decent start with their EVs, they just need to come out with more products. They got a lot of basic ideas right. Tesla and Lucid can scream about efficiency all they want, but they are not the ones hitting their mileage estimates. As "dumb" and "inefficient" as these big batteries vehicles can be, they are getting the range advertised and even surpassing it - and that's people truly care about. That would be an interesting formula to bring into a smaller form factor. Anyway, gladly you've had a seemingly good experience with yours so far and that is encouraging to hear about another EV truck in today's market.

The Silverado EV would be considered if I were towing more. I'm completely find towing my snowmobile trailer and stopping every 150 miles for 45 minutes. I'd assume the Silverado would be stopping every 225 miles with the same trailer for 45 minutes.

The vast majority of the time my nimble R1T is a better fit. I'm 6' 5'' and like a higher up vehicle.

I would consider the GM truck if it wasn't so big. I already have a 3/4T GM truck for towing my trailer but I love the Rivian for its shorter length but I can still tow my two boats for the short distance I need to. I will always have an EV in my life from now on. I hope Rivian makes it. I love my R1T

Sad to see someone that loved the R1 but left because of service and CX. I love Rivian but agree that that is the achilles heel. Thank you for sharing your experience with the Silverado. Always nice to see/hear other cars. My R1 used to lose about 1%/day. Looks like it's gone down a bit. It doesnt bother me but I can see how it can bother others. Hope you trip to Pattaya is great. It's been years since I was there. Post some photos if you can. Cheers.

Well, I'll be damned!
That would mean that GM has found and done and end-run around one of the fundamental laws of Physics.
James Prescott Joule was full of it, a phony, then!
Newton, Maxwell, Tesla. Perhaps you are on GM's crosshairs next!!

My Rivian drains as much as 2% of the pack on a daily basis. A far more pressing concern for me is to figure out how long it takes for paint to dry or how much taller my grass gets in 24 hours.
