And if you do request a lawyer right away too many departments will hold that against you, claiming it makes you look guilty even though we wouldn't need a lawyer if they could be trusted to do their jobs properly every time. Same thing with their love of polygraph tests that can't be used in court.The sad thing is that, outside of filing a complaint to put in his service jacket, there's not much you can do about this. Police are allowed to falsely accuse and arrest anyone in this country, and they frequently do so. They can hold anyone for a certain number of hours without charges to "investigate" the crime. Some of this is necessary for stopping actual crimes, but this is clearly shit investigative work and room-temperature IQ reasoning.
This is why you should never discuss a criminal act with the police without a lawyer present. Oftentimes, demanding to be represented and having the money actually to get a lawyer is enough to prevent oneself from becoming a victim of this sort of thing.
