I got my 2026 R1S last month and was using the Tesla Gen2 Wall Connector (NACS) just fine. The 2026 R1S comes with NACS so no adapter needed. Charging was normal until 2025.38 update. Now my Rivian will attempt to connect by locking the the charger, flash white light on the eject button, then turn red and the screen says "Unplug and try again" and unlock the charger.

The wall connector is fine, it is still charging my Tesla. I tried soft resetting and hard resetting the Rivian, resetting the circuit breaker and holding 'RESET' on the charger. None of these worked.

The Rivian can still charge. I plugged it in the 120V and trickle charged just fine. ChargePoint also works fine. So I think it has something to do with the .38 software update.

Check the pins on both sides and clean them. Check the settings on the charger. Had there been an update? Is it set to charge all cars not just teslas? Check the Rivian for a charging schedule and location based. Sometimes previous settings get reset after an update. Don’t ask me why

I’m convinced version .34 is what caused the issue with that new charging software screwed things up. My truck has been in and out of the shop since that update with the

Sorry man...this sucks. Part of the process with software defined vehicles nowadays, I'm sure it will get sorted out. Did you let Rivian know?

If you can find a Tesla gen 2 at a hotel or restaurant, try it there to see if it works. Also try to power cycle Tesla wall connector.

I have seen mine display something like failed to connect and within a few seconds connection completes and charging starts. Have same Tesla Wall Connector and 2026 R1S.

Mine used to be just like that! Until after the .38 update. I didn’t notice it at first since I’ve been using Chargepoint most of the time, but now the home charger just doesnt work.
If you update to .38, let me know if your charger is still working.

I’m having a similar issue with my 2025 Gen 2 R1T (CCS) but with a gen 1 Tesla wall charger using an adapter. Before 2025.38 I had no problems, now I get the ā€œunplug and try againā€ error message. My first thought was the adapter went bad, since the wall charger works fine with my Tesla, so got out the Rivian mobile charger (using my nema 14-50 outlet) and charged up the truck with that over night.

Next morning I tried the adapter with the wall charger again just to test it out before contacting the adapter support and it worked again! Drove the truck today and plugged the adapter in this evening - error message is back.

I think it is Rivian software related since the gen1 wall charger is ā€œdumbā€. My guess is the same as someone above - the ā€œsmartā€ charging scheduling from .34 is causing problems with some home chargers, maybe made worse in .38…

Count me in - charging error after 2025.38.0.

The error comes with using NACS to J1772 adapter with Tesla Gen2 Wall Connector or Mobile Connector to 2023 Rivian R1S.
Both these Tesla chargers work with our Tesla car.

There is no charger error using the Rivian Mobile Charger.

I use a gen 3 Tesla wall connector and normally after I plug-in the light ring goes red for a second or two then turns blue (for scheduled charge). After the update it turns red and won’t turn blue. It works if I disconnect and plug in again.

I did find a fix though. In the Tesla software there is a setting called compatibility mode. I turned that on and it goes blue right away. It’s in settings>vehicle charging>(select your wall connector)>access control>compatibility mode.

my guess is that the wall connectors (in normal mode) first try the proprietary Tesla protocol (not ccs) and then fall back to ccs upon an error. This is why the light ring first goes red then blue. The first handshake fails as the rivian doesn’t understand the Tesla protocol. Then, when the charger falls back to ccs, the rivian then can communicate so the light goes blue. I wonder if the update broke how Rivian handles the first failure and retry. I suspect that changing the charger to compatibility mode causes the Tesla charger to use ccs immediately thus fixing the problem.

38 came last Friday and I charged in the afternoon. Will be charging again tomorrow when I get to work.

Consider also a Vehicle Reset (hold left steering wheel button and four-way-flasher button). Sometimes that makes the charging functions work as designed.

Best wishes!

This is probably the best answer for anyone with a Gen3 / Universal Tesla wall connector. Gen2 doesn't connect to the Tesla app šŸ™ƒ

Sounds like we are in the same boat. Have you found a solution? I'm about to get a Universal Tesla Wall Connector to replace the gen 2 and turn on compatibility... still feeling sad about the situation because now I have to spend money that I didn't have to before the patch. Nothing else have worked so far.
