Or maybe a Bolt with OnStar disabled. I'm selling one, but a 2019 Bolt's maximum charge rate is 44 kW -- so driving it to Maryland would require more patience than I've got.

Best wishes!
Thanks, but I only ever wanted a truck EV which is why I pre-ordered my Rivian. 👍

You could locate the Telematics module and disconnect the cellular antenna connector. Even better would be to put a terminator on it.

I'll take that bet. As with all things, there is no *perfect* solution, but anyone who cares about privacy and not supprting surveillance capitalism, already knows to use the Brave browser on ALL devices, since it's the most private and mot performant Chromium browser, and those who really care are either using a deGoogled phone or one that's designed privacy-first like the Liberty phone also *made in America*.
Those who haven't given up their right to privacy but don't know how to protect their on-line rights, can educate themsellves starting with a few links below. Some are a few years old but are still highly relevant.
Wow it’s expensive to have privacy! That phone starts at $2,000😬

Funny, I've been told the same about owning a Rivian. 🙂

There are many other less expensive options below on the market now, but Made in America costs more.

Librem 5
Brax.Me Store
Degoogled
iode

Or, if you prefer the DIY route and are technical, ironically Google Pixels purchased directly from Google (not from a carrier) can be easily jailbroken to install one of the many privacy-focused alternative ROMs below.

LineageOS
GrapheneOS
CalyxOS
/e/OS
iodéOS

The bottom line is that there are now many legitimate alternatives instead of just assimilating to the Borg. 😏

Yes. I was reading about that as a worst case scenario. A hardware solution is always the safest solution but if I can confirm these settings are legitimate and completely in the owner's control, that would be very convenient and a kudos to Rivian, since OTA updates could be easily enabled temporarily at will.

You will have to ask the service dept to disable the LTE module, or figure out where it is and do it yourself. Without wifi, you will not get updates. I don't think you can be off-grid with the R1 and still keep the vehicle up to date.

I love the concept of the Liberty phone, but it is not ”Made in America” in the sense they are advertising it. If anything, it is the perfect example of how deep the hole is we have dug ourselves in reference to a secure supply chain.

There are major components of their phone that would have to come from China they don’t mention, and they simply suggest that chip origin isn’t that important after telling us how important it is to not source parts from those countries. OP has no more of a guarantee that phone is 100% secure and private than following the steps to disconnect their Rivian.

I’m sure most of you know this.
But if your car ever gets towed/Repo etc. the tow company can unlock your car I.e go through it and whatever without your approval. They do this through your financial company. Any financial company/lender has the software to unlock etc your vehicle. And at times, without ever notifying the owner.

Feels a little icky. But that’s what we get for buying EV/tech vehicles eh.

very easy to unlock any vehicle, if you really want to. No special software or cloud access required.

That’s also true. I’ve known people who go around with a little dongle that can unlock whatever EV.

This reminds me of a story a senior IT tech I used to work with. He had to go out to a customer's house to troubleshoot issues they were having with their wifi.

Turns out this guy had essentially wrapped his house into a faraday cage, hence why no signals could propagate.
Spent his evenings on his porch with some type of spectrometer that saw 'EMI over the horizon' and swore they were watching him.

I'm all for privacy. VPNs, firewalls, I got em. But there's always that one person who wants to take it too far for naught.

Look OP, if you're *THAT*important that someone is watching you, they already know what they want to. If not, you're nobody, and by going out of you way to obscure yourself, you're actually making yourself more of a target. Sincerely, someone who knows things...

something something delete facebook, hit the gym and hire a lawyer or some such ;)
