Good morning

Ok, ongoing project of putting a powered cooler in my frunk. The one I got was a tad too tall with the false bottom, but I think I have solved that problem with taking out the false bottom and putting cooler on a box. It is pretty steady and the right height.

As far as when / how to power it, I saw a post where there was a battery backup in the frunk plugged into the 12v (at all times I believe) and the cooler was plugged into the back up. Another person in my other post stated that sounds like a bad idea.

1). Has anyone had any experience with a battery back up in the frunk?

2). Does it present a safety hazard? I am in socal and my truck is parked outside most of the time, other than when i am at work (parking garage and charging). I know during the summer, temps can get 110 outside.

3). If ok to put in frunk, does anyone have a reccomedation for a decent one? Not too expensive, but good temp threshold, 12v battery protection (to shut off if 12v battery gets too low) and good capacity?

Best

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
I could be concerned about waste heat buildup in the frunk, especially in that climate. Stuff is going to start to warp when it's 110 out and you're pumping additional energy into that tiny space.

Personally I would go with a bed-mounted solution if you need it there all the time. A lot more air space, and you could always crack the tonneau enough to keep things safe while allowing air circulation.

I live in socal, have self installed a 12v, have a iceco cooler with a 12v battery in between. I live in Topanga and spend quite of bit of time in the valley and yes it does get pretty hot in there but in practice it seems fine.

as of late, I’ve been disconnecting cables when not in use, the battery holds its charge fine and I just connect everything when needed.

I’ve been running this setup for about a year and nothing seems worse for wear.

as for the rest of frunk, I have a boxgod roto-molded water tank with pump and a lot of camp chairs.

my kids play soccer and so we have cold drinks on the go and I cook for them at tournaments and such.

and camping, we do that as well.

As someone else who lives in SoCal, I want to warn you that 110° temps outside usually mean 140°+ temps under the hood of the frunk. I had a backpack with a laptop in there on a road trip when I first got my R1t almost 2 years ago, and when I got to my destination it was an hour or two before my laptop would even turn on as it tried to cool down from the high temps.
