Gotcha. I wrongly assumed there was an EV exemption, but it really is just for heavy trucks, which would include the R1T. That's an interesting quirk for sure.
It isn't a quirk but how they set up the system. From what I recall, the truck exemption was so it wouldn't hit those business that use heave trucks like those that are built on F250/350 chassis. The conspiracy theorist says this was to help municipalities save money.
I'm sure there was lobbying from the utilities too.

Nope, I have to pay it on my Taycan. It's painful.
You can always register and park it at my house. I'll make sure to keep it charged and move it around once in awhile for ya. ;)

So this is interesting. On the dol website for rta it shows that passenger trucks over 6000lbs do not need to pay, but there is no such exception for a passenger SUV:

I also do not see an EV exception for passenger vehicles:

Am I missing something? https://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/rta.html
I realized this sometime last week and ever since have been debating changing my R1S reservation to an R1T. If only the R1T had a 5.5’ bed, it’d be a no-brainer for me.

I believe the RTA is 1.1% of depreciated MSRP.
So for year one, it is ~$800. Over 5 years, I'm budgeting $3,600 for my R1S.

That’s correct. On a year to year basis, it’s not too significant. However, if you sum the depreciation table over 10 years, it ends up being an equivalent 7.5% tax on the original MSRP. Our vehicles are 12 and 16 years old at this point, so I prefer to consider costs over a 10 year life cycle, minimum.

An extra $6k in tax savings, $7500 federal credit, potential $7500 WA state credit, all add up to be very meaningful in aggregate. If it weren’t for these potential savings I’d just keep maintaining our ICE vehicles, which is very cost effective for me.

If that extra $6-7k over 10 years ranks high on your list of criteria then perhaps the R1T is the way to go for you. For me personally the use cases between a truck and an SUV are different enough to where an extra 10% over a decade wouldn't be a dealbreaker in either direction. I.e. I don't mind paying the few thousand extra for the R1S because I want a third row, shorter vehicle length, and don't think I would do very much with a cargo bed. One thing we do have in common is that maintaining our current ICE vehicles will be cheaper than buying a brand new ~$80k vehicle!
