BEST Insurance rates for R1T in CA???

I’m starting to do my due diligence as I begin the process of Rivian R1T ownership. I was alarmed to receive a $3600 annual premium quote from AAA, which is our current insurance provider. I recently got access to USAA and now being 50 years old I could also get access to Hartford as a member of AARP. Anybody out there got any experience with R1T insurance in CA? Who has the good deals?

Insurance is a bit insane all around and so is the cost to fix anything.

Yeah, I did my ‘15 minutes’ last night… looks more competitive but we will see how it works out.

I’m 50, multi-discount; teacher union, renters’, multi-car and good driver.

Lots of variables that go into this. Just because one company offered the best for one person, doesn’t mean it will be the best for you. Quote at least 3, maybe more, and do it every time your policy is up for renewal.

Premiums are highly variable. I only did 2 quotes when I upgraded in May - should have done more. Saved an additional 1500 on the 6 month premium by quoting additional companies last month.

I agree, $3600 isn't bad for Ca. Packages matter, so does driving record and zip code. The cost to repair is likely the largest issue causing the high cost of insurance.

I had thought about Rivian insurance through Nationwide so got quotes for 6 months

Jan 2024, $2196 -- 500/500/300, 1k deductible with car rental, new car replacement etc
May 2025, $2800 -- same coverage as in Jan

I have Progressive (P) for R1T Launch in Idaho and GEICO (G) for R1T Launch in Texas. Both premiums are about $100 per month with similar, but not identical, coverage. But one thing I want to comment on is the real-time driving monitor that both offer and which I have signed up for (P calls theirs Snapshot and G is DriveEasy). In both cases, the driving experience is monitored by my phone. My report from P indicates I am a one out of 5 star driver. In other words, terrible! On the other hand, G shows my score at 97/100. That's a large discrepancy, with in my opinion, the G score reflecting reality. It is my belief that the P implementation is flawed in that it penalizes one for the Rivian regen braking. In some cases, it sees the regen braking (say slowing the vehicle from 70 mph to 55 mph) by taking the foot off the accelerator as a hard braking event, and penalizes the driver for such. I have complained to Progressive, but they have already told me the premium on the Idaho vehicle is going to increase. I just offer this up as my experience in case anyone else is considering similar options. I advise caution when signing up for the Progressive real-time monitoring.
