Hopefully this isn’t considered self-promotion, but I think many here will find it interesting. Rivian loaned me a gen 2 media car for a week to test out the new hands-free Enhanced Highway Assist as part of the new gen 2-exclusive Rivian Autonomy Platform.

I also compare it to Tesla FSD, Hyundai/Kia’s HDA2, and my gen 1 Rivian running Openpilot on a Comma 3X.

Long story short, you don’t need to feel bad about owning an abandoned Gen 1. With Openpilot, you can make it second only to FSD on the freeway.

That is pretty much what we have all been saying about Comma and it is only continuing to improve.

I would add, it shows you how bad Gen 1 & 2 driver's aids really are at this point. We all know G1 is effectively dead for Rivian. Gen 2 has a long ways to go yet.

Just finished watching the video! I have been on the fence for this just because it seemed like a bit of a pain to install, and wasn’t sure if it was worth the hassle, so glad to hear that wasn’t your experience!

Also, what was that slide on mount you were using? That seemed extremely cool!

G2 works pretty well. Their “long way to go” isn’t as far as you’re making it seem.

The comma ai harness for Rivian is on back order, sadly.
You can order the one from Lukas and get it quickly, along with the extra harness needed for longitudinal control. If that means nothing, search those two words here; there are other threads about it.

What you need for full Rivian control:

Comma AI
8 degree mount
Main harness from either Comma or Lukas
Secondary harness from Lukas

Yes, it's expensive. He's been the top resource making this all happen for Rivian, reward him with some cash.

I really do want to get in on the open pilot stuff. Especially for when I drive Uber and Lyft. Price for entry is pretty high though. Reasonable. But high. I'll get there though

You don't have to do the upgrade right away. You can start with just the harness, get comfortable with Openpilot, and then do the upgrade when you're ready.

Depending on your local demographic, you may find a lot of people freaking out about self driving. I've had drivers in Teslas tell me they had to stop using AP because of idiots who don't realize it's safer than a human driver.

Oh I don't typically tell people when I'm using it lol

I haven't used it on Rivian yet but on my Teslas I usually have it doing the work and if someone asks about fsd I'll let them know that the car has been driving the whole time lol

Depending on your demographic, they may be too stupid to notice. Also the venn diagram of "stupid" and "afraid of AP" is pretty tight.

I used the Comma 3X on my Hyundai Ioniq 5 and it was great for lane centering but highway driving it really struggled (I used SunnyPilot). Acceleration from stop was slow and braking was poor coming from a highway speed to a complete stop. I still recommend it for those looking for hands-free on residential street.

Here you are again repeating this claim without a single bit of supporting evidence. You have been asked to share proof of this so many times it’s nauseating….

And to top it off you have the nerve to call others “idiots” :CWL:

Will Lukas secondary harness work with the Comma harness to make steering wheel controls work, or will Comma have to develop their own? I'm waiting almost 3 months for my harness from Comma...
