Among those who have had the new V2 (small slats) installed, replacing the old (V1) version: a) were they able to begin work on the day that they scheduled the service, b) how long did they keep your truck to complete the install, 3) has the new PTC been functioning well since it was installed?

I am scheduled for April 10 to have my PTC replaced (it has been broken/nonfunctional since January).
They tell me it is to be replaced with the new V2 (small slats) PTC.
They also told me (today) that parts are due in to the service center by the 10th (but I am concerned that won't be the case).
They told me that it should take 3 hours to replace/install, but I am also concerned about that.

It looks like you are also in the PHX area. I am also scheduled to have mine replaced on the 10th at the new Tempe service center. I guess we will both learn at the same time how quick they are to get this replaced.

This is the first I am hearing about receiving the small slat version, which if accurate is a nice surprise.

This is confusing, I didn't think the new small slats TC would be able to be retrofitted into the original setup. Also, in my head I see the versions as:

  • V1: Original TC that had torque issues and would jam
  • V2: Fixed version of the TC that moved slower and jammed less
  • V3: New thin slats version that came out with the Dune release

I had mine installed in Feb. This was not a replacement, but the initial install (picked it up in August, and they had a "by the end of the year" promise).

I presume it's the v2.0, but it doesn't say anywhere on the invoice what version it is. Anyone know how to tell?

On my invoice it does say:

Correction/Remedy:
- Cover, Tonneau, Powered (Retrofit, Vehicles Manufactured With Channels)

On that note...I've only used it a few times, but it seems to be working fine.

I don't believe they had uneiled the v2 until 3/2/2025 so if yours was installed in February it's the 2nd gen v1 if we were to give it a moniker.

The slats are the obvious difference, they fully redesigned the new one the slats appear on images to be 1/2 the width and I believe it might roll up and go partially into the gear tunnel (speculation based on a few pics/ videos that have been shared)

Thus far anytime service has given me a hard date for parts arrival they have arrived by then or been early, it's only when they don't have an ETA that sometimes it's taken longer.

I am a new (03/26/26) R1T G2 owner with the ‘small slats’ V2 Power Tonneau Cover (PTC) installed when delivered (so no info related specifically to retrofit/replacements). Providing a few comments for clarification of discussion:

@PhiltheCasual :
“…in my head I see the versions as:
V1: Original TC that had torque issues and would jam
V2: Fixed version of the TC that moved slower and jammed less
V3: New thin slats version that came out with the Dune release”

Understandable, but Riven calls the ‘small slats’ version V2. It has been suggested that for clarity we refer to the versions you indicated as:
V1, V1.5, V2

As a previous/recent G1 owner, I have compared the gear tunnels on my G1 with no PTC and my G2 with V2 PTC. there are no apparent/measurable changes to or inside the gear tunnel to accommodate the V2.
@Riviot previously compared internals (drawings) which seemed to confirm the space used for the V1/V1.5 ‘cassette’ was able to accommodate the V2 cassette.

@McLovin:
I presume it's the v2.0, but it doesn't say anywhere on the invoice what version it is. Anyone know how to tell?

…and…
@AYAYRON

The 36 interlocking slats for the V2 PTC are each 40mm wide - a bit over 1.5”, where as the V1 and V1.5 had 9 wider slats. The V2 does indeed roll up into the space above the gear tunnel.

There was someone (pretty sure it was Out of Spec) who made an initial comment that the gear tunnel looked smaller (or that the bump inside was protruding more) in the Dune trim which they assumed was because the new new PTC must take up more space and thus wouldnt be compatible with older R1Ts. it was an off the cuff statement with no confirmation from Rivian and that rumor has spread pretty wide since then.

It sounds like this thread is debunking that.

Yes, there were a lot of questions and concerns (including by yours truly) regarding those initial V2 reports. For me it was mostly concerns that use of aftermarket gear tunnel slides and storage set ups already designed or on the market might be impacted by changes to the internal gear tunnel space. @Riviot’s review of service drawings showing no apparent gear tunnel change was pretty definitive for me and made sense given the physical (sheet metal) changes that would have apparently been necessary if the V2 required additional space over that required by the V1. The ‘ceiling’ of the gear tunnel does have a small section that is slightly lower (3/4”?), but I believe this is to accommodate the slide up gear tunnel access panel between the rear seats, which I believe was also present in G1 R1Ts and is not new. Regardless, that small section is still no lower than the G1/G2 gear tunnel door latch assemblies on each side.

I will report back, as to how it goes. My R1T is my work truck; if they can't give me reasonable assurances of a quick turn around (when I get to the service center), I might have to delay it until they can do it quickly. I went through this a year ago when they installed the upgraded (V1.5) PTC. They told me, then, that it might take two or three days. We rescheduled, and they were able to complete it in about three or four hours.

I'm not well versed in what delta there'd be between the v1 and v2 (we know there's a bulkhead that ends up installed into the gear tunnel area to accommodate v2--but what it entails to get it in there, I am unaware of).

That said, I wouldn't worry as much about the timeline, all other things being equal. Zach Nelson (aka Jerryrigeverything) had his tonneau replaced and video'd it. It didn't appear to take too long:
