If yours is happening just about every time after sitting say overnight in a garage (and is NOT wet) then you may be having what I had... In the end they had to replace everything from the motors out to the wheels... new hubs, cv joints, axles; whole thing. Moisture didn't really impact much on mine; did it anytime it sat for like 8 hours or so.

For reference mine is in the 30xx vin range. Mine was so loud it sounded like a gunshot going off. would scare the crap out of me every morning and would sadly wake up my wife when I was going to the gym at 6:30am.

Is yours an early one as well?

Not that early, it's a 18XXX.

They did remove and replace my front Halfshafts due to the clicking/ting washer issue that has been well documented back in September of 2024.

My R1T has be doing that for nearly 2 years any time it sits for any extended period (overnight), particularly if there is any moisture. Doesn’t matter whether I’m departing in Fwd or reverse….
Mine's been doing it for awhile but it can't be good for the vehicle so just trying to figure out if I need to do something about it or ignore it...but since it wasn't doing this in the beginning I'm hoping it's not a new issue.

I love my truck, but have had so many issues with the suspension, shocks, half shafts, etc. Rivian has addressed all of them, but it's an issue.

That's very loud! Could be a semi-stuck or compromised piston in one of the rear calipers that's not releasing all the way? Could also be a binding caliper, didn't Rivian have issues with corrosion on the caliper slide pins?

I think this is caused by a layer of oxidation bonding the brake pads and rotors together. I had the same thing on my Mach E as well and learned to brake hard enough to heat up the rotors before parking when it was wet out.

I seem to remember some instances of pads fusing to the rotors so bad the car wouldn't move as well as parts of the pad separating and sticking to the rotor.

I found this thread backing the above up

I've seen this from time to time and also put it in as a ticket on one of my last service appointments. SC said they didn't find anything unusual. I felt like it was as if the brakes get locked up or something, definitely not normal. However when it.occurs is quite random, and sometimes so.loud that it can jump scare you.

The other difficulty with this is that since you're backing out when you hear this, you don't really get a good chance to make a clear video unless you have someone else help out.

I'm, in Vancouver where it s rains a lot and yes, this has been happening a lot after one of the later software updates.

Definitely feels like the parking brake sticking, but also feels like they may have applied the normal brakes too in addition tot he parking brake to prevent slideaways.

You should move to the PNW, this is a normal morning sound from Oct-Apr 🙃
I am in PNW and usually park in the garage, but I have been parking outside from about 2 months and it's not normal. Mine did make that sound 3-4 times when it was parked for more than a week. Parking brake binds of course, but it's rare. Parking for a long time can cause similar issues on other vehicles too.

If it's happening everyday, I would suspect excessive play in calipers or possibly related to parking on an incline. Rivian drags the brake a little bit while moving from a stop

Rawrr_dinosaurs's response way back is 100% correct. It's corrosion causing the pads to stick to the rotors and isn't a caliper or other mechanical issue. My car does this as well after washing it (it doesn't get driven in the rain so washing is the only situation where the brakes get wet).

If you can't stand it, then you need to sell the vehicle.

I have this noise on my R1S, and have had it on other vehicles. It mostly happens in winter when road salt gets into the brake mehanisms.
While it may be rotors sticking to pads as others suggested, in my case I have always found it to be the pads sticking in the caliper channels from salt and oxidation. I haven't done this yet on the Rivian, but on our Model 3 and previous Model X, I cured it by removing the pads evey 2 years, wire brushing the contact points, and reinstalling with caliper grease.
Note that in order to remove the pads from the rear wheels, the parking brake must be disengaged. Tow mode is how to do this. BUT, remember to chock the wheels before starting, and disengage tow mode before lowering, because the car can start rolling. Don't ask me how I know...

The parking brake in actuality makes use of the normal brakes. They’re applied by an electric piston rather than the hydraulics. So, in the event of a failure of the hydraulic system, the vehicle can still be slowed/stopped.

Mine makes the noise every time I pull out of the garage. It was extra loud once and I brought it in for service but nothing was found.
