Parking brake sticks a little after it gets activated while wet and sits for a while. Normal.

It's made worse if your initial movement is the opposite of what you did when parking.
i think you've got it right

seems to happen when I back into a parking space., let it sit 8 hours and then pull forward out of it

100% this is normal and NOT a Rivian thing. Rotors fuse to the brake when wet and parking brake is engaged for many hours. You Notice it more because you are in a garage (echo chamber) and you don’t live in a daily wet environment. I have had MANY vehicles do this here in the PNW. Do not call Rivian, do not take an appointment time from someone that really needs it.

My R1T has be doing that for nearly 2 years any time it sits for any extended period (overnight), particularly if there is any moisture. Doesn’t matter whether I’m departing in Fwd or reverse….
Same

Lately whenever I engage my truck from a stationary position into reverse, there is a large almost breaking free sound that also gets worse whenever there is moisture. For example, if it rains or snows, the sound is typically louder. It almost sounds like the shocks and the struts are seizing up after sitting for a while and then they break free when I reverse the vehicle. This can’t be normal or good for the truck and I’ve submitted a service request, but I wanted to see if other people have experienced this and post a video.
Help?!?!

Mine absolutely makes a really loud breaking free sound sometimes when backing out of garage first time for the day.
I told a mobile service guy about it and it was not unheard of.
It dosen't sound right

The rear brakes are what's used for the parking brake. I'm going to assume you're one of those people that never uses the parking/emergency brake on a normal car, so you've never experienced this before...but it's totally normal. If you don't want it to happen, then dry/heat up your brake pads and the rotor by dragging the brakes before parking.

I have that for a long time already. I think the cause is because I have heavily rely on regen braking so my brake pads haven't been used for a long time and they become sticky. I purposefully press the brake on the highway to wear it down and then the next day the loud snap noise is gone.
I think it depends on the weather and the humidity.

This 100% fixes the issue!

Yeah. Mine makes a similar sound. I back my R1T into the garage and have taken to rolling forward the park rather than the reverse to park. Seem to mitigate that somewhat. Still get it though less.

I have a G1 R1T 2022 Had since oct 2021. Yes early adopter. Mine has done the “break free “ from the beginning. Coming up on 50k mileage, has not changed, no wear on any parts. Its just everything releasing at once, just before moving in reverse.

Personal antectode: I had this for a few months but it’s completely gone after I had my front drive unit replaced for different reasons. Maybe coincidental since it happened in the “cold” months here in OC but it’s completely gone now.

For those saying "I've never had this happen before, my XYZ vehicle didn't do it", be aware that the Rivian brake pads are probably 2x to 6x bigger than your XYZ vehicle. More surface area to stick, more surface area to break free, louder noise.
Yup. I'm guessing many people "have never had it" because they never set the parking/e-brake on their automatic transmission ICE vehicles and relied on the parking pawl in the transmission. As I and others have said, the mitigation is dragging the brakes before parking when it's rainy/snowy out to dry them off.

My Tesla will do that if I drove in rain, washed it, etc and it’s colder. It’s just the initial breaking free from the hold position over night.

Mine did this after sitting in service for a couple months. Sounded awful. Thought I broke something just moving in reverse. It's fine now.

Thank you everyone for all the feedback! Looks like its relatively normal and won't cause any damage to the truck...thats all I want to make sure of.
