I may have reading comprehension issues but that phrasing in the post means very little to me...done turn? Does all that work?...ahh?

This is the first I have heard of this feature. From a Rivian employee on instagram.

Volvo has that too. They call it “corner illumination”. I used to leave it on but too many people would flag me down and try to say I had a defective light. I turned it off. I use my fog lights whenever my low beams are on, now, so corner illumination would be worse.

My Subaru turns on and off one fog light at a time when turning . the camera needs to “see” the lines in the road for the lane departure warning I find it easier to just leave them on .

Not exactly groundbreaking. Even my 2012 Tesla Model S has cornering lights that activate at low speeds.

Done = don't...lol.

So I guess when turning, as the headlights don't turn, the lower lights activate to illuminate as the steering wheel turns to directionally shine light into the turn. I assume they then turn off when steering out of the turn and straight, at that point just relying on the headlights for forward illumination.

“While dem headlights done turn, I reckon dem gators and possums be done scared away in the gulley road by dat dare light and dem Bud light in my console.”

I'm pretty excited about this. Mostly that it's better than nothing, and I just drove a Kia Forte for a week without bending headlights and absolutely hated it.

Projector beam bending headlights will illuminate further, but there is more mechanical complexity, too. My mom’s Buick did what Rivian is doing, except with halogen lights and the Buick was way better than nothing. I expect Rivian with LEDs will be better even better than what I experienced.

Lights that are motorized is as everyone noted an "old" technology. And yes there have been complaints about it bothering oncoming drivers. The newer, more effective version is adaptive driving beams. So instead of using 1 or 2 beams of light (low/high), many smaller individual lights(LEDs) are used. Sensors are used to detect oncoming traffic, pedestrians and can dim one or more of the lights that are in the target of the beam. Much more effective at reducing light into the eyes of another driver or pedestrian.

Unfortunately, this tech is not legal in the US. Blame lame, old laws for this. So not Rivians fault it couldn't use a better technology even if they wanted to. I think its still cool that they included the lights that help with turns.

US regulations excel at being stagnant and slow adoption of superior technology. Europe was using replaceable headlight bulbs for years, the US required sealed beam headlights starting 1940 and it did not change until 1983! It was a huge choke on vehicle design - front end design pretty much had to start with the stupid sealed beam headlights. When they introduced the rectangular headlights, front end design followed and cars went boxy.

Here's a good article about the history of this nonsense.
