I’ve seen opinions on Rivian’s Supercharger adapters, Lectron, and others but can’t seem to discern if there’s a consensus “best” option. Is there a clear winner or is it basically a crapshoot? Thanks in advance. Picking up our R1S on Saturday and immediately want to take it on a long road trip!

Not a lawyer don't pretend to be but I have the Rivian and A2Z adapters. Rivian says only use their adapter I guess this is due to liability reasons... I prefer A2Z and choose to use this primarily....My opinion only once UL2252 is ratified and approved and vendors are certified I would say go with that....EVGO just updated their terms to say only UL 2252 approved adapters....No idea is Rivian adapter is certified for UL 2252.

The Rivian one is the only one that you can be guaranteed won’t void your warranty in the case of a problem. I also have an A2Z one that I got before my Rivian one arrived, but I would only use it as a backup. If there is a problem with your charging session that damages either your Rivian or the Supercharger, and you were using a 3rd-party adapter, either or both Rivian and Tesla could use that to say that you were liable for the problem, not them.

Great perspective. Thanks!

Thanks not sure if they are, word is Tesla made them and I want to say that UL2252 was ratified 20-35 days ago....this means every vendor on the market for adapters should be going thru the process and nothing is "approved" yet

The Tesla made one isn’t UL certified either. It’s approved for use at Superchargers simply because it’s by and from Tesla. Lectron and A2Z adapters may be as good or better, but they just lack that official approval. Tesla policy states theirs, or one approved by OEM. So far there is only one other adapter that an OEM has blessed—a version of the Lectron that Ford sells, bearing Ford’s logo (along with other differences). That doesn’t mean you’d enjoy same legal cover if you used that with your Rivian, because Rivian has not given approval.

We received our adapter from Rivian today even though we didn't place our order until the 21st. Not sure if they extended the deadline or if the Trimax still gets them or if we just fell through the cracks.

Welp, the Rivian rep said he doesn’t know and can’t find any documentation stating anything definitively. So there’s that.

I trust A2Z typhoon pro more than the Tesla made Rivan adaptor....
So do I. The A2Z is encased in a silicone coated exterior and can probably take abuse. And it has a protective hood over the top latch. It's also designed with one single button to release both latches at the same time. Little chances of fumbling or ejecting the adapter out of your hands while releasing the latches. The Tesla adapter feels like brittle plastic cheap toys are made of. It does not have a protective hood and if you hold it incorrectly while depressing the latch to release the NACS plug, you stand a good chance of launching it away from you.

But since I'm neither a Tesla nor a Rivian lawyer, how I feel is beside the point and will not hold water in any legal dispute over coverage of damages. Between the four adapters mentioned, it isn't a matter of which one is substantively superior. It's about which one would you be caught using when things do go wrong.

After trying the Typhoon Pro, Typhoon and Ford / Tesla OEM adapter. Here are my thoughts on them.

They all work great and beats having to use Electrify America. The most user friendly is the Typhoon pro due to the single switch to control the CCS side and NACS side. I also like how easy it is to hold the Typhoon pro securely. The lip on the NACS side is a nice touch to make sure the adapter doesn’t slip out of your hand.

The Ford / OEM Tesla dual latch is a little more user friendly compared to original Typhoon but a little harder to grip securely while toggling both the latches. I think grip tape might be nice to have as long as it doesn’t mess with thermals.

You can buy the original Tesla OEM adapter from Rivian for $250 with free shipping BUT NO RETURNS ALLOWED.

I personally keep both the OEM Tesla adapter and A2Z Stellar AC / Typhoon Pro DCFC adapter to have myself covered at all times.

This ensures I have a backup always and I can charge at Tesla Destination chargers commonly found at hotels / shopping center / parking lots.

New orders: Current estimate for A2Z is shipping will take 1 - 2 weeks for the new Typhoon Pro adapter. Still in time for Spring Break travel plans.

Discount promo code “RIV” is still working and free shipping is also available.

Establishing a UL Standard is a multi step, multi year process with multiple publications of the standard as it progresses. From what I see, the standard is still in development, so there can be no UL tested/listed/approved devices. It’s probably 6 months to a year or more.
