I travel with long sea kayaks and currently have a fair distance between front and back rack so I feel very comfortable on long highway travel with stability. R1T roof racks seem very close together on photos I have seen. Does anyone know what the max distance between roof racks are in R1T and R1S? and if it is more in R1S?

It's definitely longer on the R1S if you're only considering the roof attachment points. However, the R1T is a longer vehicle and it does have attachment points in the bed, so if a "tower" accessory comes out (has been teased, I believe) then that would definitely be the longest option.

Great point about the accessory. I never thought of that. If I see a solid option before my number is up, I may switch to R1T. The tunnel step is definitely a plus to help with loading and unloading. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yakima will make one. Right @wicked2112?

One thing to add is that the R1S will have an option for a 3rd roof rack
I see what you are talking about in this photo. That looks perfect. The distance between the first and last spot is very close to where internal supports are in my Kayak. Nice. If I had the side step and full size spare from R1T here, I could live with lower towing capacity. But even as is, the interior space you can sleep in is mighty attractive. Why can't I have it all? leaning toward R1S.

Thanks a bunch. Very interesting solution. I am not sure how it will do with cross wind and two kayaks on but none of the reviewers were complaining. I currently have the one shown bellow in my bed which I won’t be able to use in R1T without loosing tonneau cover function. The tower accessory @CommodoreAmiga suggested would be perfect. I hope Rivian or third party provides the option before my number is up. But if they don’t yours is a great solution.

All - When you say tower accessories, what are we talking about????
It would be an extension that would theoretically snap between the bed rail attachment points and the crossbars to extend them to the same height as crossbars on the roof.

This would allow people to carry long things, like lumber, ladders, kayaks, etc.

here’s a non-rivian-specific version:

Yeah... I'm in the same boat (ba-dum-bump), I have 2 sea kayaks, one is 16 and a half feet long, the other is 14 and a half feet long. I very much doubt those cab mounted rails are far enough apart to give me enough space to secure the boats and not poo myself when I drive them down the freeway.

I'd be looking to have a tower extension off the bed to add stability to the boats and give me another anchor point to secure them to (as well as leading and tailing tie downs off the front and the rear of the truck (hence needing the Adventure pack).

Those haven't been developed for use with the current vehicle setup. Think about this, the Overhaul system is a much heavier system than what wasnt designed for use on the R1Ts side walls. The integrated system on the Rivian is very different and much lighter. I could see in the future something like the OverHaul being developed, but it would need to be much lighter.

I am an R1T pre-order guy. I frequently travel with a 21 foot long fragile Outrigger canoe or 21 foot long surfski (racing Kayak). I was initially (at the Mill Valley, CA event) told that the bed rails would be able to telescope up to match the roof rails. Subsequently CS told me this was no longer in the cards. I was pretty bummed, but then she told me the distance between the rails on the roof (I honestly cannot remember what the distance was), and it turns out the the distance front to back is greater than my current setup on my MDX(see photo below). With a set of Goodboy Kayak Racks (which I highly recommend), it will be absolutely no problem to carry long kayaks and canoes on the roof. I have used the below setup many times between the Bay Area and Hood River (10 hour drive). I have also used it with a 23 foot long two person outrigger, but I would consider a line to the tow hooks.

I would have never guess you could survive a 10 hour trip with a 21’ surfski with that setup. That is reassuring. Thanks for a very helpful post.
