Rivian just sent out a "Data Privacy Update" email. Here's the part that jumped out at me:

Recent Privacy Updates
Interior Camera in Gen 2 Vehicles. Vehicles built for model year 2025 are equipped with an interior camera in the rearview mirror. This camera is OFF by default. You may choose to opt in to (i.e., enable) data sharing from the interior camera to help improve and develop vehicle safety systems. We do not associate these images with you or your vehicle for product improvement or development.
Gear Guard Live Cam. Our new feature allows you to:
  • View live video from your parked Rivian
  • Check on your vehicle's surroundings right from the Rivian app
  • Respond to alarm system notifications in real-time, with live viewing
As always, owner privacy and safety are a top concern, so video is end-to-end encrypted to prevent unauthorized access, and Rivian does not have access to this video.

1. Interesting that they moved the camera to inside the mirror... I thought they removed it.
2. With the new real time feed from Gear Guard, why can't we activate that camera to watch Pets in Pet Mode?

Let's hope while the setting appears to be off, that it actually is.

On a somewhat seperate note, if I were to plug in a USB storage device to save all "incidents" (basically a dash cam on steroids), what is the law on those videos? If the driver of the Rivian is at fault, can that evidence be used against us? Or is it our choice? (Seems unlikely)

I am not a lawyer, but my understanding is that you can refuse to provide a copy of your dash cam video to an officer. They can always work to obtain a search warrant. If granted, that could require you to provide the video files.

They removed the camera from the Gen1 more than a year ago.

They added the mirror camera in Gen2. It's documented in the owners guide: "The interior camera is located in the rearview mirror facing the driver"

I found it in the settings. It says if you turn it on Rivian can use the images for improvements to safety. In effect you are giving Rivian the ability to watch you.

Suggests they will eventually roll out hands free driving, no? The camera will monitor the driver to make sure he or she is paying attention instead of requiring hands on the wheel.

As someone who uses but never trusts driver assist systems, I’m not sure whether it’s a good idea to allow hands off but i understand Rivian probably feels pressure to keep up with other offerings.

To Rivian’s credit, they haven’t (at least not yet) ever suggested the car is self-driving or otherwise oversold its capabilities.

Ohhh yes they did...

Remember when Gen 1 was supposed to be hands free? Remember when they said the Gen 1 hardware would be capable for 5 to 10 years? Remember when RJ and Brian Gase went to events in NYC, Seattle, etc... and touted that we could be hands and eyes off on curated tours in National Parks?

I do.

Indeed, it's still on the RIVIAN website. I'll happily join any class-action to keep them to their word on this. Wassym can eat a 1000-lumen flashlight.

Rivian Driver+
Rivian Driver+ is standard on every vehicle we build. Delivering true hands-free driving assistance along with our full set of safety features, the system continually adds functionality through over-the-air updates. By making Driver+ standard, our goal is to make driving safer, easier and less stressful for everyone.

With the system engaged, your Rivian will automatically steer, adjust speed, and change lanes on your command. Enabled on select highways at launch, more road types will be introduced through over-the-air updates. Like all driver assistance systems available today, Driver+ requires your full attention on the road at all times and you should not use a hand-held device behind the wheel.

Driver+ is powered by two redundant compute platforms, 12 ultrasonic sensors, 10 exterior cameras, 5 radars and high precision GPS. An interior camera monitoring for driver alertness adds an extra layer of safety. Every Rivian vehicle will include our complete hardware package and all Driver+ enhancements will be provided over-the-air at no expense. More information on features and limitations will be in the Rivian operator’s guide.

Every car can be hands-free if you're brave enough.

Technically it is hands free, eyes off the road.... until it asks you to grab the wheel after about 10 seconds.

I used Driver+ quite a bit last week during my trip through the states, and for me, I engage it and usually rest my hand on the wheel in a more relaxed fashion and let it do the work. It's unnerving when passing vehicles that tend to creep into your lane on corning because it still tries to remain centered despite the neighboring vehicles proximity. I would like them to implement a bit of slack in the steering takeover allowing me to adjust the automatic steering without it disengaging completely.

In case you doubted ha ha

Interesting that they have just now sent out a notice about this. I noticed day one when I got my vehicle it had that setting in the privacy section. But as they said, it was turned off by default. I imagine this will change once they start adding features that rely on the camera

I tried that with a bicycle when I was a kid... Took three of us to get the bike unstuck from the neighbor's bumper...

It's funny because while doing my trip to Yosemite/Crater Lake etc last week, I remembered an interview RJ did with FullyCharged in a gondola where he talked about (to his credit) the POTENTIAL for curated national park tours, where the vehicle would navigate itself, while also providing information about the area etc to driver and passengers, akin to Jurassic Park with the jeeps.

One of the things he touched on that immediately sold me was the potential for me to drop the truck at one end of a trail and the truck would meet me at the end of the trail. I thought that would be fantastic for mountain biking, and given Elon's "puffery" of FSD over the years lead up to Rivians vehicle launch, it seemed plausible that a couple years down the road, it would be software updated to allow it.

I think it's a case of Gen 1 MobileEye platform being shiny new tech for a new tech company, and it seems capable at the time, until you really delve into the capabilities of the system, and the liability implications you as a company are willing to take on should a touted eyes off, hands off system be the cause of an accident or fatality.

Watch it again. He calls them features that they will be showing "in the next year" and never even uses the term 'potentially'.

If this were the case then why did he say that it is a feature and that they will showcase it next year? If they had no idea MobilEye wasn't capable, then why promote the features so heavily?
it’s a level three features so when you’re on the highway you can take your hands off the wheel your eyes off the road so long day at the office you get on the highway and you can be on your phone yeah you know longhand the slopes you can do the same but we then have some really interesting sort of Rivian specific features that are unique to our brand and one of them is this feature where it allows you to do things you know when you’re out now let’s say the vehicle meet you at the end of a hike we have some really interesting ones where we’re gonna have the vehicle let’s say are in a national park we can give you a guided tour of that Park you know narrated and explaining what you’re seeing but it’s like the vehicles on digital rails for the Jurassic Park style as it as it drives around the park so these are some of the features we’re gonna be showing over the course next year yeah maybe we’ll put you on the vehicles on tour I’m absolutely looking forward to it”
