Hello all,

I am looking at purchasing a used R1T that I found online. It is a 2022 R1T Adventure with Quad Motor and Large Battery pack. It has 50k+ miles, which makes me a little nervous that its that high, but I was wondering if there is anything specific I should be looking for when I go test drive this vehicle or talk to dealer about Anything that would make me say no to the car that would be a glaring issue?

I'm in Pittsburgh, but the car is 4 hours away in a different state. So I will have to drive it back 4 hours and don't want any surprises. Also, the closest SC to me is in Cleveland which is 2 hours and 15 min away. Just trying to go into this as prepared as possible.

Any advice is appreciated!

Thank you

Edit: additional questions that I thought of. Does Gen1 get the lane change with Driver+? and is there a way for me to ask the dealership about battery degradation?

I really don't know what to think about a 50k mile Rivian; few people have that many miles. You still have the remainder of the 8 year/175k mile warranty. Normally, for a 50k vehicle I'd say that you arrange a pre-purchase inspection but that would need to be with Rivian to be worth anything.

You will need to charge to make a four hour trip. Get the Plugshare app, Rivian app, and ABRP app and learn to use them before the trip. Find compatible chargers.

No auto lane change for us.

There's a service menu, but really, battery degradation is super rare. And warrantied. You can google instructions for "Rivian service menu" and the value you are looking for would be something like pack_real_max or similar.

There are several threads on inspection checklists. Below is a link to one such list. As an owner of a 2022 R1T with 56K miles I can say that my range has not degraded at all. Likely because Rivian opened the buffer a bit with OTA updates some time ago.
As long as the test drive goes well, your inspection looks good, and the price is right then I would not hesitate. I also purchased a used R1S from a dealer that bought it from auction last March it has also been great. They both are not Porsche quality fit and finish but are similar to other vehicles I've owned.

Yeah, the mileage has me somewhat concerned, but It's good to know that I still have that warranty to rely on, incase something does go wrong. Appreciate the heads up on how to find the degradation and glad to know that it is rare.

I'm trying to get the dealership to come down on price slightly because of the miles.

I appreciate the checklist! Book marked for when I visit the dealership. What is the most recent software that a Gen 1 R1T should be on? I want to make sure that its completely up to date before picking up.

I would not make this a thing, at all. Updates are trivial to do. Don't expect the dealer to know or do anything on an unusual vehicle like this.

They may have factored this. It's a very strange time in the EV market, and the *entire* car industry is on a low right now. And probably headed lower. Time is on your side if you go slow, unless you particularly like THIS one truck for some reason. I bought a few months ago because it was a very perfect LE with extras, but dollar-wise, I could have saved money by waiting.

Anyway, it's going to be hard for you to come up with a rational price in today's rapidly/randomly changing market.

Edit to add: There was a software update yesterday, and it's only about little user features and unimportant. Don't expect it to be there, but it could be. But it shouldn't matter. The last update gave a nice suspension upgrade, about a month ago.

Main issue is the warranty. In 10K miles you will be out of warranty, less than 1 year I assume. There isn't much data to tell us what might happen after 3 years of life and off warranty but looking at the amount of time these vehicles have gone back to service centers and the future cost of doing so, I would expect to see some significant costs if things go wrong. There isnt much of an after parts market and not many if any independant service centers. Everyone's different, but there is no way I would own one of these off warranty and I would assume thats why someone traded it in.

That is a good point. What is the differences in the warranties offered? Comprehensive is 5yr 60k miles and then battery and drivetrain is 8yr 175k miles. Assuming the comprehensive covers everything that isn't battery or drivetrain related?

Comprehensive has been pretty close to just that. These are early editions of a new factory, so there have been lots of niggly things which we are all OK with since its all under warranty. When it costs you 2-5K each time to fix, it will be different. Its the one thing that makes me nervous about the early vehicles TBH.

I would look for a low milage (under 20K) and a late registration date (look at the carfax). Find a 22 that was registered very late in 22 or even 23. That will give you the most months of warranty.

I plan to keep mine way past warranty. At this point mine has given me no reason to question its longevity. And it is a very early one with 45k. But I do have a theory that the really early trucks were under alot of scrutiny and got alot of QC at plant. At least mine sure seems that way.

As most people say on here....people without problems don't post....so I figure the majority of R1's are actually very solid vehicles.

But like you said...everyone is different. I have high risk tolerance...but if I feel Rivian is taking advantage of me out of warranty....it will be gone fast.

Plus Meridian...I can't live without it....

I'm on 2024.19.06. There is a new update out today or yesterday but I wouldn't worry if you don't have it. OTA's come automatically and can take a few weeks to reach every vehicle.

You (or the dealer in your presence) may be able to call Rivian service with the VIN and get a rundown of any and all service visits completed to date. For example does it have new power tonneau, any other warranty work done, have brakes been replaced, etc. If the brakes have not yet been replaced I would bet they are close. Almost certainly will be on second set of tires.

Good luck. If you end up purchasing I think you will be very pleased, I love my Rivians.

I am excited to hear the Meridian sound system. I've heard nothing but good things.

I tried calling Rivian to offer them the VIN and ask service questions but they wouldn't speak with me. I will have the dealership call and get a detailed report since they are the current "owners"

I have a delivery checklist ...there are a few floating around. Go through the checklist, inquire with Rivian RE: service history to find out if its had issues. At 50k on a Gen 1 Quad your still within the new car warranty for another 10k mi. Battery and electric drive is 8y 175,000 mi.

Thanks everyone! Small update for those who care lol I decided to not go through with the purchase and look for an R1T with lower miles. I don't foresee any issues with the truck, but would like to be covered under warranty if something were to happen.

Good luck in your search! I purchased a pre-owned 22 QM LE R1T that had just over 9K miles on it. Rivian has been great in taking care of the issues I've found, and i got a new power tonneau cover also.
