The Out of Spec team has been running an R1S DM Max press car in their recent Ft. Collins CO to Las Vegas road trip 'races', and experienced some strange route planning behavior where it almost forces the route to RAN chargers, even L2 chargers with hours of wasted time, instead of known EA and Tesla chargers along the route. We've never seen this before in our R1T DM Max, on our recent 4,500 mile road trip to Texas and back and along many of the same driving segments they had issues, or right now just plotting a trip to Ft. Collins...so WTF? Anyone else seen this?

Every time I take I-10 to Cali from Phoenix, it wants me to stop at the RAN in Quartzsite which is only 120 miles from home. So yes I can confirm this is true. I leave with 100% and choose to make the first stop at least twice that distance away.

I have never experienced anything this egregious with the R1T, even in areas close to where they are traveling. I am wondering if they have some nav settings that are forcing the behavior, like preferred/excluded chargers and or charge at arrival. Though I don’t recall if that’s configurable or not…

Keep in mind they are trying to get views for their videos. May be valid, may not be, but failure will probably get more views than success. Personally I think their videos are way too long to be useful, so I don’t consider anything they present.

This is the same problem I have had post-OTA update.......never had it taking the same route dozens of times prior.

Have you done a UI reboot to see if that brings it back to 'normal' ?

They cancelled the trip and retried it 2 or 3 times. Same issue every time.

I'm not sure after 48,000 miles if anyone has done more than me ;)

Tangentially related - I just went in a 500 mile drive and one of my charge stops I had instructions to charge to 68%. I plugged in and started charging.

I went to a different UI feature - music or something - and then went back to nav and it says 75%.

I thought "huh, could have sworn it was 68... Guess I was mistaken"

Then I fiddled around elsewhere, went back to nav again and it said I needed to charge to 78%

Rinse and repeat... It changed to 85%

My route hadn't changed and I was just sitting there charging the entire time.

I have no clue why it kept creeping up. At first I was thinking it was updating for wind or something (I think ABRP premium has this so maybe it also lives inside range calculations??? Doubtful but maybe?)

But by the time it was 85% requested charge I realized it was borked and ended nav. Replanned my route and it went back to "normal"

Never happened before so I can only assume it's related to the last update

I just took a short trip this weekend that had some very confusing trip planning behavior. The car was trying to force me to make 2 charging stops when I knew I only needed 1 based on my SOC. I then put the trip in my Rivian app and the app said I only needed to make 1 stop. I tried to send it to the car from the app and again the car then decided I needed to make 2 stops.

The car must use different logic than the app, which is weird. I do not remember setting any preferences regarding my end SOC, which the car would not let me change.

Not sure if OOS mentions this (not a fan of super long format videos), but there are charging network preferences in the vehicle. Rivian is the preferred network by default, but that can be changed.

I tried planning a couple of routes with and without a preferred network and they were the same, though they did both have me charge at RAN locations. ABRP showed similar routes, but pushed me a bit harder. One of the available routes had me charge at an EVGo station and that was 1 minute faster, but it also had higher mileage and 12kwh more energy consumption.

I know sophisticated in vehicle trip planning may help soothe EV buyers' range anxiety, but I find ABRP is a better prescription. I never used the in-car navigation to plan my trips, even in a Tesla.

Now that I think of it, on the way back from Sequoia, the nav wanted me to stop at the RAN in Buttonwillow instead of the supercharger in Visalia. Thought it was weird but didn’t think much of it. App suggested the supercharger though.
