I know 3PMSF and efficiency don't always go hand in hand, but unfortunately when you need snow tires range can also be scarce. I realize there are a ton of threads that speak indirectly to this but I've perused them all and still have this question unanswered. Thanks in advance!

I have the Yokohama Geolandar CV 4S (275/60R20), I'd say they are about the same as the OEM 20" Pirelli. The new 20" OEM Goodyear will likely be similar. I also like the Nitto Nomad Grappler, I think it will be nearly identical, so there are at least 4-5 3PMSF tires available in the 275/60R20 size...

The Goodyear Rivian tire was designed to be efficient and have good snow performance (among other objectives).

A tire designed specifically for snow performance would likely sacrifice efficiency.

You think the Nomad Grappler will be as efficient as those other ones?

And what about wheels? Atomic the best for efficiency?

The Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) ratings are provided directly by the tire manufacturers and can vary across different brands. There is no regulatory authority overseeing these gradings.

Yes, any of the options 25-26# should be best efficiency (ignoring individual aero effect)..

My top 3 choices for efficient 3PMSF (on the AWZ1 Rim):
I'd lean to each tire as follows:
Yoko - All Weather, limited/no offroading, best snow/rain/ice performance
Goodyear - Best efficiency, limited offroading, limited rain/snow/ice performance (without the channels, hydroplanning likely to be more of an issue)
Nitto - Best offroading, good snow/rain/ice performance, lower efficiency

Rivian R1T R1S Most Efficient 275/60/20 Wheel/Tire Combo with 3PMSF? 1719435655620-3

The Goodyear tire prioritizes efficiency, but rain, snow and ice performance were a part of the design optimization (among off road and other considerations).

If they’re the same efficiency as the pirelli AT and an inch smaller, that doesn’t seem so good, no?

I’d say it’s really good, actually.
They ride much much better.
There is zero noise.
They are 3PMSF
And they cost about half as much

Understood, it sounds loosey-goosey. How do you approach UTQG? Would you group the 580 and 660 and say they are ā€œclose enoughā€ and maybe a 720 and 800 are also in the same category? Traction seems less manufactured but I can’t say for sure. What about temp? Is that also worth ignoring?

Would love to know how you group or ā€˜approach’ these three criterion.

the part I dislike the most is ā€˜none’, that’s I guess for off-road focused tires typically?

maybe even worse are tires pretending to have a UTQG but not even tested? That wouldn’t just be ā€˜none’? My brain is exploding…please help me understand the upside down of tires…

Not because of i'm bias of owning the Aw09. I think the Aw09 is more aerodynamic than the AwZ1, even though it is a little heavier.

UTQG grades aren’t absolute for cross-brand comparisons. They’re useful when comparing tires within the same brand.

From Tire Rack...
"Well, these often-misunderstood "grades" do provide some information for consumers, but unfortunately they're not as useful as originally intended when they were created by the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It's important to note the DOT doesn't conduct the tests for UTQG grading. The tests are performed by the tire manufacturers (or a 3rd-party testing company) and reported to the DOT. "
