Where have you seen that? I must have missed it. 2024 Dual+Large/standard/standard+ has an EPA test group that includes 9 - 9 module battery (Aren't all of Rivian's batteries in 2024 9 modules, including max pack?). 2025 Large hasn't been posted yet but I'm anticipating it potentially having a 7 instead of a 9.

I also see no good reason they wouldn't have Large available at launch if it was just a software locked Max other than trying to get people to buy a more expensive vehicle if they want one out of the gate.
The Rivian rep (15:20 min mark) doesn't state the #, but the pack structure looks to be the same size with room for 9 modules. The part about the Ascent Motors is interesting.

I may be missing something (which is easy for me to do) but, the stated expected milage is under very controlled conditions. My understanding is that each vehicle is tested under the exact same conditions. For the average Joe, a few rounds of 0-60, elevation changes or even strong headwinds; will eat any 27mile difference up easily.

I guess we need to wait for some actual testing in real world conditions. I'm not concerned about the range for day to day use, just for road tripping where an extra 27 miles (if that is the real difference) might make a difference in some of the remote/rural areas with poor charging infrastructure. Or might not. I was hoping the improved efficiency would lead to an extra 20-30 miles with the large pack. Instead they made the pack smaller, likely hoping to push more people to upgrade to the Max pack.

The better energy management (heat pump etc) I feel would make up for the lost 27 miles on drives wouldn't it?
Those improvements won’t make up fully for losing over 20kWh which equates to 40-50 miles. So 27 lost range seems reasonable and 13 or so miles made up with efficiency improvements.

I'm very happy with most of the updates and I'm pretty hesitant to buy the old version at this point.
...But that's what you pre-ordered, is it not? You gave Rivian $1k way back when for Gen1 specs, you can definitely get a Gen1 basically anywhere now, but you're waiting to milk the system for 20% off a Gen2?

Is there no honor among thieves anymore? Flat out: most of us holdouts got lucky with the pre-order pricing scheme changing to a 20% off voucher, taking a dual motor saved even more than the original discounted pricing.

I'll be really surprised to see anyone able to use their voucher on a Gen2 and lose respect for both Rivian and that owner. Rivian: stand your ground here and only sell the Gen1. Owners: have some self respect.

Dude, whatever. Sure I preordered a Gen 1. Then they told me they won't deliver to my state since they have no service centers here. So I bought another vehicle instead. Then later they said they would deliver here, but still no service center so it's a risk. So I decided to wait a bit to see if they would announce a service center here. Then they said take delivery by 9/30 or the voucher goes away. Fine, seems fair enough. Then they announced a refresh for 6/6. So I decided to wait and see what the refresh is about. Looks like some good changes, and they sent me an email saying I can still use my voucher but only on shop vehicles. Again, seems fair enough to me. I fully realize that I lucked out by placing a reservation in Jan 2022, and I'm just following the rules Rivian makes. I would never have bought one at the new pricing - the only way they're going to sell me one is with the voucher. If they had said vouchers only apply to Gen 1, I'd probably buy a Gen 1. But that's not what they said.

Rivian has told us in no uncertain terms that they are totally OK with letting the few preorder holders that remain buy a Gen 2 as long as it's before 9/30 and it comes from the shop. Sorry if that doesn't fit with your ethics or whatever, but I'd rather get the latest version with some real improvements if they're making it available to me. And frankly I don't GAF if you lose respect for me or Rivian, and I'm pretty sure they don't either. This is not about honor or thieves or whatever BS you're trying to make it about. It's a calculated business decision on their part and an informed consumer decision on my part.

Maybe you should just try to enjoy your Gen 1 truck and your holier than thou life and not worry about the choices that others make.

The gen2 packs seem to be set up to push the max pack. Gen 1 pricing made max pack fairly redundant, but here it's almost a must with AT tires.

Let's not pretend rivian didn't repeatedly move the bar and pull the rug on pre-order owners. For good or ill, the car we drive now is both better in some ways and worse in other ways than what was originally advertised.

But the biggest thing I don't get about all you haters of those that still have vouchers... If you truly want Rivian to succeed, why would you get your panties in a twist that we want a *refresh* = higher margin vehicle??? By letting gen1 sell at retail and patiently waiting for the refresh, it's a win win for Rivian. They get to keep their commitment in it's evolved form (fair), and they make the most money possible.

This is one of the problems with our society. We can't just be happy for other people when they get a benefit, if it's something we couldn't/didn't get ourselves.

I'm not milking anything, just getting ready to buy a Rivian, which they are happy to sell me, at the price they have offered me. Just like you did - twice apparently.
Apparently my (and others') good fortune somehow offends your jealous and petty nature. And no I won't be quiet. Enjoy your dual Rivians and leave me the F alone.

We are happy for people to have the discount like I did but there has been over two years to get the vehicle. Get a Gen 1 as promised for the price not an new updated lower depreciating new one.

I will enjoy my Rivian’s thanks but don’t complain if you come on here maiming about using your 2.5 year old price lock for a new vehicle and get some pushback.

There has not been over 2 years for those of us who live in places without a service center. They refused to sell me a vehicle until much later. Now they have offered to sell me a Gen 2 (WHICH IS CHEAPER FOR THEM TO MAKE, AND THEY ARE CHARGING MORE FOR THEM, SO IT BENEFITS RIVIAN AS WELL AS ME - THIS IS WHAT WE CALL A WIN-WIN). SO NO, I'm not buying a soon-to-be obsolete Gen 1. I really dont get why you seem to be obsessed with this, other than you are bummed that your 2 Rivians are suddenly depreciating faster than the shiny new ones. Honestly I don't GAF about your opinion, and I'd really appreciate it if you'd stop telling me what to do. Thanks!

Yeah you guys are right, I'm a jealous asshole and should mind my own business. I'll just go use my pre-order discount on a Gen1 for a family friend and kick rocks...

My concern here is that some of you think you need to be playing gatekeeper on our purchases. Which of course, is insane in any context.

My $100k ($80k) purchase really isn't anyone's business but my own. But if anyone wants to debate on how some of us are still waiting after all this time, perhaps we should turn to Rivian about how some of us don't have convenient service centers, some of us can't lease in our state, some of us can't even get a test drive that isn't a 6hr round trip.

And I get it, I really do. I sense the jealously because it's exactly what I felt when I took delivery of my first Model S in Sept 14, 1 month before autopilot. And it's similar to the way I felt when I took delivery of my second Model S Feb 16, one month before the refresh. You see, I've been in both camps.

But if Rivian is willing to sell me a refreshed inventory vehicle and honor my voucher, I'm going to take it. And I'm not going to feel guilty about it, and I'm not going to be spiteful that I've missed out of driving one for years like some of you. I'm happy for you even though you got something I didn't; take note of that.
