Seized rear calipers - Rivian stuck me with the bill

After an update a few months back, Rivian started using braking assist to slow your Rivian at times when regen braking was reduced. In my case, it seemed like it was using the brakes all the time to slow down, which was evident by the amount of brake dust it was creating. Before the update, I had almost zero brake dust. When I asked my Rivian engineer neighbor about it, he said, Turn it off in the setting menu. I haven't really noticed much difference, except for almost no brake dust.

Please excuse the rather naive question, but where in the menu is regen off? I just picked up my R1T yesterday and in my brief experience, have only seen standard and high as regen settings, with a low regen feature that can be enabled in Snow mode.

Sorry, I wasn't that clear. You cannot turn off Regen, but you can turn off brake assist. Their are certain instances where the R1 will reduce Regen, because your battery is too full (80% or more) to accept the extra power coming from Regen. It does the same thing when towing a trailer down hill. To fix the feeling of suddenly not having regen, Rivian added brake assist which simulates regen when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal. To accomplish this Rivian actuates the brakes so you don't get that unexpected loss of regen stopping. I turned it off in the settings menu, because I rarely drive under conditions where regen would be reduced. This should make the brakes last a lot longer.

While having a tire rotation at Les Schwab the tech noticed one worn brake pad due to a stuck caliper. Rivian replaced both rear calipers and all four rear brake pads. No charge. I’m really happy with the Portland Service center.

Just replaced the rear rotors/pads on my 2022 R1T a couple weeks ago, similar wear on the inside. They said my front pads were at ~40%. I also had to paid the bill for rear pads/rotors, came to ~$500

My mileage is almost to 58k miles as well so I wasn't too mad about having to small service bill. I expect I will see more the longer I keep this truck. Good news on things like suspension components is that Rivian supposedly warranties their work for 2 years and those all got replaced late last year.

That is not a terrible price for OEM rotors and pads if that also includes the labor.

Yes, I'm paying for labor and pads on a vehicle that mostly stops without the aid of brakes after 35k miles.

I had to pay for labor, pads, and rotors for mine as they were so bad they had damaged the rotors. Very common issue in the northeast. Unfortunately they are not covering this (or variably so from some peoples experience) and the only preventative action they offered was for me to pressure wash the wheel wells once a month. Agree this should not be happening on a vehicle where the breaks are rarely used.

To clarify: Rivian only charged you for the pads, correct? And your calipers were not fully seized, just needed popped loose and greased? I'm confused by the title, it sounds like they stuck you with a bill for new calipers.

If it's just for pads, that isn't unusual. Pads wear, and unfortunately it seems faster than predicted in this case. Mine are getting low in some spots, and I suspect a stuck caliper. I'll likely DIY at the next rotation and grease them myself, I strangely enjoy brake work.

I recently replaced the rear pads on my old Land Rover. DIY $50 and 30 min .
Rotors were fine.

One of the reason for getting an electric vs ICE vehicle is low maintenance costs. Don’t know every one’s situation, but I have owned multiple teslas with over 100k and never replaced the brakes. I just use high regen on all, including my R1t. Part of learning curves is to anticipate your stop and have the vehicle do the stopping for you. I don’t use brake assistance, and my brake pads are like new. Almost 30k on the vehicle. (I don’t drag race between stop lights, and slam the brakes )

When reading this I wondered, "If the OP is using Brake Regeneration Assist?" As someone who drives in the Sierra Nevada and Santa Cruz mountains quite a bit my first thought was, "turn off regen assist and never use it." I'd rather not have the truck dragging my brakes down a 4-6% grade for 4+ miles, and then have to stomp on the brake in an emergency stop. I'd rather know those brakes are cool and ready for said panic stop, and if I need to slow down in the interim, do so the old fashioned way....by using my foot on that big pedal on the floor.

Yeah thanks to everyone who recommended turning this off. Brake assist, un-lubed guide pins, and Northeast road salt is a bad combo.
