Okay, forgive me as this may seem remedial to many of you, but some of the battery discussions have been over my head.

Is it correct that the Standard+ battery is simply a max pack that is software locked to 79%? (Will Rivian say as much? I saw people found it was indicated as SW lock in some EPA(?) documents.)

If it’s purely a software lock, some related questions:
  • Will the S+ charge to “100%” as quickly as the Max charges to 79%?
  • Can an S+ owner then routinely charge to 100% and effectively only be degrading the battery as if charging it to 79%?
  • Does the SW lock approach mean S+ owner won’t see degradation (to range) until the battery is actually more than 21% degraded overall? Or is one “locked out” such that degradation hits proportionally to overall battery health?
  • How would the hit from cold weather affect the S+? Suppose it’s sufficiently cold that the overall battery takes a 20% hit. What happens to S+‘s range?
Is it possible the sole disadvantage of S+ compared to Max is inability to charge past 79% on occasion? (That could be a meaningful disadvantage to some but makes the S+ a screaming deal for many use cases.)

Thank you in advance.

As a "soon-to-be" Std.+ owner all I can say is "I hope so".... ?

Yes, it is believed that S+ and S are software limited packs right now based on EPA filings. Charging-wise, I can say with mine that I was above 100kW charging speed until 80% last time I DCFC, but it was hot and sunny so there may have been some derating due to temperature. Personally, I thought Standard+ is the sweet spot with the battery packs and have been very happy with it so far.

I believe some guides have been telling folks they can charge to 100% in the current S/S+ configs.

First off indications are that S+ is a Large pack that is software locked not a max pack. Of course that is what charging curves seen so far indicate Rivian could change that at any point for example by changing to LFP packs.

To your questions:

- You have got the right idea
- Mostly, but since S+ is still ~90% of the large pack you might see some degradation, but again you have the right idea. You could charge it higher than a large pack and have less degradation.
- I think it depends on how Rivian handles this.
- No I don't think so. The efficiency lost isn't in the battery capacity. You just lose efficiency because you have to heat your battery and cabin.

This is speculation on my part, but it makes more sense (less of wasted battery) if standard / standard+ are one and large/max are one battery types rather than what was stated in other treads and apparent EPA filing.

I believe Standard (270mi) is software locked Large (340mi) and Standard+ (315mi) is software locked Max (400mi). Approximations on 100% charge milage for DM setup.

Will the S+ charge to “100%” as quickly as the Max charges to 79%?
-Same same
Can an S+ owner then routinely charge to 100% and effectively only be degrading the battery as if charging it to 79%?
-Yes
Does the SW lock approach mean S+ owner won’t see degradation (to range) until the battery is actually more than 21% degraded overall? Or is one “locked out” such that degradation hits proportionally to overall battery health?
-Maybe
How would the hit from cold weather affect the S+? Suppose it’s sufficiently cold that the overall battery takes a 20% hit. What happens to S+‘s range?
-I suspect same hit, it's an efficiency hit not an overall "battery" hit. I notice 5-10% change from 65°F battery to 90°F battery.

Hard to say where the 20% is deducted if this is the case. Could be 20 at the top or 10 and 10 at the bottom. Maybe 15 and 5. It makes sense to draw power from the center to promote battery health though.

I had read the Standard and Standard+ were software locked LARGE batteries.
I currently own a Standard+ R1T. I love it. I have the dark 22s on them, so I get 300 miles on a full charge. Last time I charged to 100%, it showed 298 miles. But I think and hope that is because of the way I drive and not because I have already lost 2 miles of range in 2 months of owning the vehicle.

I know Rivian will give us the option to upgrade from a dual motor to performance dual motor in the future, I wonder if they will do the same for battery also. It would make sense, and additional income for them.

If an OTA update unlocks the full battery potential, I hope that’s something offered in the future. As a Standard+ owner, I’d welcome that option!
