500 employees sounds like a lot but as of this month globally Tesla has 5,952 Supercharger locations and 54,892 chargers.

Without breaking down each persons job function that breaks down to 1 person for every 12 stations or 110 chargers.

Does Tesla currently contract out the break/fix, or was that also the realm of that (ex-)department? That’s what I would be concerned about.

I think the 500 were in charge of future locations. Not support or production. Therefore no more new locations. Tesla has already backed out of a few NY locations.

Can someone objectively explain if this will have any impact on their charging network or their ability to rollout and install chargers? If not, isn't this just trimming fat? Similar to rivian cutting out guides?
Considering they’re also backtracking on pending deployments by cancelling leases, and for sites that would provide capacity where it’s needed it doesn’t bode well. Perhaps it‘s his way of back pedaling on opening the network and undercutting his competitive advantage to be able to sell more Tesla.

It’s not trimming fat when you wholesale cut an entire team for a critical function/service you provide.

This article specifically mentions 4 sites that they just scrapped as part of cutting the team.

Besides permitting, real estate acquisition and utility connection what else is involved. Giga Shanghai builds the superchargers and Giga NY will assemble them onto preforms concrete pads and contractors install them. Definitely not a 500 person job.
Hahaga, giga-this and giga-that. Keep dreaming.

There's a team of Tesla employees that travels around the county. I'm not sure if they are part of the layoffs, but I'm trying to find out directly from the team.

My disappointment is with the dozens of Tesla V2 Superchargers that are not available through Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming.... A couple V3 in Burney, ID.

You are still stuck with L2 scheduling for a Yellowstone trip.

I believe we still haven't seen any Tesla v4 cabinets capable of the 1000V the NACS spec claims. The EV industry needs to continue advancing, and charging capability is a big part of that.

China has a few companies deploying DC charging stations on their standard that can already deliver over 500kW. Several cars for sale in their market today are capable of accepting those rates.

A lot of folks are here because they care about the EV movement, and it's telling when others dismiss this move as potentially not a big deal.

You aren't the first person to predict the demise of Tesla under Elon. People like you are always wrong, Tesla is in a short incubation period before blasting off. You will not even recognize Tesla in three years. But, yeah, hold onto your shorts, LOL!
how do you predict Tesla will be different in three years?

To my knowledge there was never any federal government money associated with the NACS deals outside of NEVI-funded sites.

The innovation in charging is just getting started. Over the next decade we should all hope to see continued advances in charging speed, reliability, costs, and ease of deployment. Tesla is definitely ahead of the game in terms of reliability, cost, and ease of deployment, but not charging speeds.

By laying off the entire group, it will likely slow down or halt any of their future improvements, and will likely impact their current advantages.

Reliability is a perfect example. They are reliable with Teslas today, but what happens when 10 new OEMs are adding to supercharging. If they have integration issues (which this team was responsible for) their reliability could substantially drop.

We can debate about whether this is a genius move by a CEO who is playing 10-dimensional business chess, or yet another poorly thought out decision by a petulant and mercurial chief executive completely lacking in self-control.

What is not really debatable is that Tesla's BOD is not exercising its primary function to ensure that the company operates in a responsible and effective manner.

I think the OEMs that signed up for NACS and drivers of non-Tesla's should be very concerned. NACS will not be their saving grace as far as charging infrastructure. Ford and Rivian got access, but what about the other OEM's? GM should be next, but will it? Will any other OEM's near term or long term? I have heard Ford just sent out an email stating the NACS adapters will be delayed. I think the consortium of OEM's developing EV charging stations (Ionna) should step up and very quickly or the BEV adoption rate will surely suffer. Full disclosure: I own a Tesla and soon a Rivian.
