For those with no spare tire or that have changed over wheels and tires…

What are you using for your spare tire?

Is there an affordable option to use not rivian?

How many of you rotate your spare tire in?

No spare here, and no desire for one.

I am relying on the air compressor and as a backup my cell phone.

In 30 years of driving, I've had plenty of punctures but none were so bad that a quick top off didn't buy me a few hours to get to a tire shop. And if my tire was damaged so badly that I couldn't just fill it back up I would just call for a tow.

It doesn't make sense to carry around a huge tire all the time when the odds of ever needing it are so low. And especially so in an R1S where I would have to leave the flat tire (or my kids) on the side of the road and send someone back to retrieve it, a tow isn't that much less inconvenient.

Thank you so much for your input. I have the 22s and have found a set of 20s but they only have four so I am debating on the spare issue...

It depends on if you want the official Rivian spare tire kit, which includes a jack, puck, etc.

If you want to build your own jack kit there are plenty of options for spare tires that could be cheaper, second hand is probably the best option.

I used to rotate my spare in but probably won't anymore, I don't feel strongly about having a matching spare anymore.

Thinking about it I have never used a spare in years. It is a waste of space and for the amount of money it costs it makes me think it is better to use the space for something else and save the weight.

I plan on getting it. I got two nails in a tire going from Los Angeles to Phoenix last year. Try getting a Tesla tire out in the middle of the desert. The place I tried to get it fixed at laughed and pointed at a dodge caravan and said we work on cars like that. Luckily I had a portable compressor and I was able to drive another 20 miles to a real tire shop but the whole experience added 3 hours to a 7 hour trip. If I had a spare I’d been back on the road in less then an hour.

Most of my flats are just due to punctures from nails or screws. I'd rather plug a tire than have to get everything out to swap the spare on and deal with it later.

My wife would be relying on a road service technician. The service we have covers installing a spare so I ordered the OEM 21" with installation, pucks and jack kit for $800. I believe the weight is only around 75 lbs.

Besides, a spare is required by our beach access permits so for us it's a must have.

I do not have a spare yet for my R1S but keep thinking about it.

All but one of our tire issues have been nails that would be temporarily handled by TireJect and the compressor. The only one that wasn’t was one of our drivers hitting a load of bricks at 60 mph. Catastrophic tire shredding for all. I figure if that happens again, more than one tire would be damaged and the spare would solve only some of the problems.

But driving without a spare feels weird. I was joking with my son when driving the other day and seeing someone changing a tire on the side of the road. I said “there are a lot of guys my age who grew up on Formula 1 and NASCAR who always wanted to be part of a pit crew”. And he just looked at me.

I go off road a lot, so I have to have a spare. I've had punctures that can't be repaired with the slime, and slashes that can't be repaired at all. And I carry a plug kit. I've had to use 3-5 plugs in a tire and still didn't fully seal. My used R1T came with a stock tire that had been patched, on a GM Hummer wheel. Apparently they are the same wheel dimensions. I have not verified this myself, the original owner seemed to be knowledgeable, and is a dealer service manager. Hummer take-offs are dirt cheap around here.

I have spare and kit; do 5 tire rotations; when not off roading I keep the 75lb child in garage. As others stated if offroad you want that spare.

Just to add a data point, I have the spare with kit from Rivian. I also have aftermarket jack pucks and a bottle jack. Have had my truck for a year and a half and haven't had to use it until the first hour of a 1300mi road trip I just got back from Tuesday. Driving on the highway when the truck notified that a tire was dropping in pressure. In ~3 mins the tire went from full pressure to 0. Whatever had punctured the tire 'cause a leak until it got flung out and created a sizeable hole (in the middle of the 20" AT lug too) that just adding air to it to deal with it later was not an option. If I did not have a spare I would have had to call AAA/Rivian/Tow Truck/etc.
