Update: R2T trademark pending!

Rivian R1T R1S Rivian R2T pickup? [updated with R2T trademark pending] rivian r2t trademark

Original post:

I might be just out of the loop, but I keep hearing stuff about the R2S but nothing about the T. Is there something I'm missing or are people just less excited? I saw a reply about hoping it would me Maverick sized, but I haven't heard much else and the teasers are R2S's.

We are hopeful there will be a smaller sized pickup, but nothing official.

No Indication of an R2T however if the success of the compact Ford Maverick is any indication it might be a successful product. The only issue is price. The Ford Maverick is a compact and it a lower price point than what was announced for R2. At 40-60k R2 will still be a premium vehicle.

The R2 is positioned well in the most popular segment of the US auto market and also right at or just slightly above the average price of a new vehicle these days.

Even pre-delivery, Rivian has many more R1S orders than R1T orders. Makes more financial sense to concentrate on the SUV. A R2T would probably just take sales from the R1T. Some people are ant a more compact truck, many more want a SUV.

I doubt they ever make a truck smaller than the T, even though I would be interested if they did.

Coming from a Tacoma I find the size of the T to be just fine, but it's still more truck than many need. If it were any bigger I would not have purchased.

I've heard (but not confirmed for myself) that they said there will be NO R2T in the last earnings call.

On p.4 of the /23Q4 shareholder letter they said; "We aim to start production in 2026 and look forward to unveiling our mid-size SUV, R2, to the world in just a few weeks."

Throughout, they've talked about the R2 as a "platform" so my only hope is that there will inititially only be a R2S BUT that later on, they will build out other body styles using the same platform. That seems to be the idea but who really knows. Maybe we'll find out more tomorrow!

TBH, the R1T is already R2T sized.

I thought a small R2T that was the size of a Hyundai Santa Cruz would be popular. I don’t think thank size would eat into R1T sales. Just helpful to have a small bed for cargo sometimes rather than enclosed. Especially cool if they offered a popout roof hatch option. I know they have considered all these things. Just a matter of focus and execution and Rivian is learning to be more simple with plans.

I've heard (but not confirmed for myself) that they said there will be NO R2T in the last earnings call.
Just to satisfy my own curiosity, I found a transcript of the call. (Free account required)
About a third of the way in RJ says; "And as we look at the launch of R2, learning from what we went through and launching R1 with R1T, R1S, and also the commercial vans, all in parallel, we've really simplified the product portfolio cadence with R2, where there's a single vehicle that we're launching. The number of build combinations and trim combinations is very limited, with an emphasis on managing rapid ramp-up of the supply chain and driving operational efficiency into the R2 plan." [Emphasis mine]

So, no T tomorrow, maybe an opening for it down the road.
I just want a 6+ ft bed...
