I went in this direction (BTW: that price doesn't include taxes and seems to be an estimate--I think I spent closer to $1200 all-in). I personally like the OEM-ness of having the spare tire with the jack and associated hardware in a nice little kit.

However, I've seen people around these forums make MUCH NICER kits with MUCH BETTER equipment for a solid cost savings.

It comes down to: how much work do you want to do?

That said, there are people everywhere selling 21s (it seems), so grabbing an extra wheel and tire alone for ~600-750 is pretty easy to do. Just make sure you get something to 1- hold everything down (That also won't scratch the heck out of your wheel), and 2- keep your jack and tools from banging around in the well.

It isn’t just a spare. It’s a kit, jack kit + tire & wheel. Those who had it in their config originally, before it was removed by Rivian due to supply shortage, can order it and ask for original price to be reinstated.

Alternative, you buy a wheel & tire that people routinely sell here (but watch out for scammers) then piece together your own jack kit and mounting hardware. Search and you’ll find specific examples of how some have done it.

I just confirmed my order a week ago but didn’t know you can get it at the old price?

We originally had a spare included in our R1T order. We ended up selecting a truck from the R1 Shop that did not have a spare tire. having done this, Rivian would not give us the original price for the spare tire package. We ended up buying a 21" spare from EV Sportline for $700.

We have our own jack and tools. We installed our spare with the outer side of the wheel up so that we can occasionally check the pressure in the spare.

FWIW, as everyone gets a different story from different employees at Rivian, I've spoken with multiple Rivian employees about this and was told:

1) Because they handle the spare tire/kit as a service request, you can't order it until the service department can "see" your vehicle in the system; that happens only after you accept the purchase in the app/pick up your vehicle.

2) After you do that, call the Service number (the number you see in the description of that item when you "try" to buy it in the Shop), tell them you need the spare tire/kit, and give them your original order date (way back pre-3/1/22) and they should quote you the original price. Technically, you're entitled to the old price only for items that Rivian removed from your order, as I understand it. But, they may not even ask about that.

I'm scheduled to pick up my vehicle next week, so I'll be doing the above.

I thought I could add 21” spare tire to my configuration but I think they moved it to the gear shop. I only see the 21” road but it’s $1095???

https://rivian.com/gear-shop/p/full-size-spare-tire?sku=RCD-004

Are you owners opting for this or a different alternative?
check your local market to see if anyone is selling? I see many people are switching from 21" to 20" and have their used 21" for sale. I just bought one 21" locally here in Dallas for $500 with tire that still have lots of thread life left.

Call number shown on the product page. Explain to them you had received email from Rivian when they announced removal from configs—and stating that you’d be able to buy removed items from the shop at same price at later date. They will explain pricing will be adjusted by the service side, but will make a note of it. Once service processes your order, they may ask you to provide a screenshot of said email (include header showing date). You add it to the service ticket that would have already been created soon after you placed the order. Then, before service appt date, you’ll be sent a work order estimate to sign. Double check price before you sign. If price has not been adjusted, call number on product page again. That service generalist will ping local service center to have work order revised and resubmitted for your approval.

The previous price of the spare and jack kit was $450. Now it is $1095???
What number on the product page?
This has to be done after I pick up my vehicle?

Not sure where you sourced your $450 figure. For the 20" AT spare kit, it was $800 at time of removal from my config. Gear Shop page. The page for the full size spare. You probably don't need to wait after delivery. Call the number and find out.

Email from Rivian said that the compact spare is $450. Is that like a 18” without the jack set or something?

Oh you have R1S. The compact spare should include jack kit. https://rivian.com/gear-shop/p/compact-spare-tire. "Tire service kit inlcuded"—that's what it means. And, "Compact spare tires will be available to order in fall of 2023." It isn't available yet. They are running late.

Yeah I have the R1S. So it’s a 20” slightly smaller than standard 21”. No big deal. It comes with jack kit. $450 not bad.

Do they not have compact tire for R1T?

If you are a pre-March 2022 reservation holder (before the price hike), you will be on a list to access the spare at the originally market price. Contact your guide to arrange the purchase at the discounted rate.
