Found the exact DM config I was looking for last night on the shop. Locked it in and started all the steps.

When it came to delivery method, I saw the below. I thought all methods cost $1k? Are they waiving the fee if I pick it up at the service center? Or am I paying extra for the home delivery now?

I think you’re thinking of the “destination” fee which is about $1,800. That is charged regardless of pickup/drop off location. The delivery fee is new within the last handful of months and is only charged if the vehicle is brought to you instead of being picked up at the plant or service center.

The $1,000 is an additional charge for home delivery is what that says. Service center pickup is no charge. All vehicles pay destination fee even if you take delivery at the factory in Normal. Last I checked destination fee was $1,800 or there abouts. I’m guessing home delivery costs them a lot so instead of increasing destination for all they are giving the option and charging for home delivery.

Tesla charges extra for home delivery too.

The "destination fee" is mandated by law. The auto dealer mob paid legislators to put this in place so that some dealers wouldn't have an advantage over others by being closer to the factory, etc.
(I picked up my Tesla at the Fremont factory and had to pay the destination fee.)

This is an extra fee for home delivery now, but TBH it should have always been charged. Free home delivery was something I appreciated, but I thought it was a huge loss leader for Rivian even when it applied to me and I was shocked they were willing to do this. If you went down the cost list, as I am 3 hours from a service center my delivery costs Rivian several hundred dollars in fuel, probably a hundred dollars in maintenance costs on their delivery truck and an entire day's worth of cost for their employee.

So out of that 1K fee it's at least 500 in direct attributable costs probably even more than that as there are all sorts of other costs I'm not factoring in like insurance. I get that it sucks something was free and now isn't and that feels like something being taken away from you but it wasn't a tenable service from the outset and I can understand from a business perspective the long term health of the company benefits all owners. Having Rivian still exist in 5 years when my truck is out of warranty is going to be important for resale and that applies to all owners.

Destination fee, every car sold has this. Rivian or otherwise. It's the cost to transport vehicle from factory to sales distribution. Home delivery fee was announced some months ago.

Neither is a free cost to Rivian. They are, after all, a business striving towards profitability?

If we are making laws on such things it should be part if the vehicle price IMO. They can simply put in peren that "includes destination charge of $x,xxx".

When we took delivery of the S it was a surprise to my wife and she wasn't happy.

I believe Tesla includes destination on their order page. One of the things that broken with thr dealership model. Thousands of dollars in fees get added after the fact..... a bait and switch if you ask me.

Interesting enough, the Minneapolis SC can't do pick ups so they're waving the fee here.

They can and some do. The law does not specify how it is listed. See the second paragraph below.

Is Destination Charge Included in MSRP?
Every new car comes with a document spelling out its equipment and options, and how those factor into its manufacturer's suggested retail price or MSRP. This document, often called the Monroney or window sticker, also lists the destination charge.

How it's formatted can vary. Sometimes, two prices are listed: One showing the vehicle price alone and the other with the destination fee added. In other cases, there's one price, with the destination fee summed into the MSRP. Approaches vary between manufacturers, but the destination fee must be included somewhere on the Monroney. MotorTrend always reports prices with the destination charge included.

True. I'm a fan of having everyone listed the same way because that benefits the consumer.

This is not the destination fee. I am picking up this week and there is a normal destination fee, but I had the option to pay 1k to have it delivered to my house, or to pickup at the service center for free.

I paid the 1k hoping for a nicer experience than going to Brooklyn SC. Wasn’t thrilled when they rolled up with my truck, and informed me they had driven it the entire way vs flatbed it to me.
