Great video. Biggest take away is that in an ice car you drive to under a quarter tank. Ev you might just go to half sometimes due to planning to make it further later.

I use a completely different strategy for road trips. I did a trip from Phoenix to Tahoe. On the return I decided to use only the RAN and to use the new target charge predictor at each stop. These were my stops, left Tahoe at 90%:

Arrived at Bishop with 36%, charged to 58% in 12 minutes.

Arrived at Inyokern with 20%, truck told me to charge to 51%, but we ate there and got to 62% in 22 minutes.

Arrived in Barstow at 39%, the truck would not give me a target to Kingman. I estimated 85% would get me to Kingman with 15%. Charged for 34 min to 85%. Ignored the truck telling me I needed to stop at EA along the way.

Arrived in Kingman with 14%. Charged to 74% in 36 minutes because we also ate at that stop. Truck told me I needed 75, but 65% would have been enough.

Arrived home with over 30% left.

So I drove 765 miles, 12.5 hours of driving with 105 minutes charging. The truck estimates are too conservative for me, but are probably good for others.

JCG, in your video you mentioned that you were driving in “conserve mode” predominantly, however I didn’t catch what wheel/tire combo your R1T has. The ranges look like you probably have the 21’s.

I agree, I like dropping to a lower SOC than it recommends. So sometimes (before update that allowed us to remove charge stops) instead of using the Rivian app to plan the trip I would just use it only to get to my next planned stop.

Interested to see how it goes with the latest update making it easier to change the charging plan

I was able to trick the nav to get the target charge estimates along the way. When I got within 30 miles of my charging stop, I would cancel the route, then insert the next charger as the destination. It then kept the next stop, and gave me the target charge level for the following one. That did not work for the long Barstow to Kingman leg, however.

We just stopped to eat and relax a bit at our stops, so that’s why we charged up to almost full.
