Anyone done a bring-your-own plate delivery? Or out-of-state plates?

Excited to take delivery of my R1S, hopefully in Q3/4 this year! (still waiting for that delivery estimate to update, like everyone else).

Has anyone either brought their own plates to their Rivian delivery, or worked with Rivian to deliver the vehicle in a different state than where it's registered? How did you set that up with Rivian? I am not having any luck...

I ask because I have a unique situation in which I (not Rivian) will be temporarily importing the vehicle to Canada, but it will need a US registration first and the state in which I can legally register the vehicle in the US (east-coast) is not even close to where I need it delivered (west coast).

As I see it, I either need Rivian to deliver the vehicle in a state other than where they register it, or I need them to deliver the vehicle without plates and I will bring my own plates and registration for it.

I don't know about the particulars of your specific situation, but when I picked up my truck it had 90 day temp tags on it already (and a temp registration I downloaded from their website). Would that be sufficient to cover the gap period you mentioned? ?

My guide handled registration through the Virginia DMV and my proper plates & registration arrived in the mail a month or so later. Maybe they can handle it for you, as well? Good luck!

They can deliver without it being registered where you pick it up. I wanted a custom plate on mine but did not want to worry about it getting messed up in the purchase deal so had them just do the standard registration for CA. I picked it up in Normal, Il with CA temp tags, drove around the east coast for a couple of weeks, CA plates were at my house when I got back to CA so went down to the DMV to transfer my custom plates.

It was an Illinois "Drive Away" permit.

I take it these are pretty standard for vehicles leaving the IL factory for destinations elsewhere. Should give you plenty of time to handle registration in your destination state.

Registration likely will not be complete on delivery for you to put your plates on. You will have a temporary. I've not heard of them actually processing final registration documents prior to delivery since you sign those documents when you take possession. I could be wrong there now since I took delivery May '23.

I worked with my assigned guide and things were ready when I got to Normal.

CA is a state they have a dealers license so they can register here. Might be different if it is a state (or province) where they are not a registered dealer.

I’m not sure if the cross border specifics but at least in the US you do not have to register the vehicle in the state you purchase/take delivery in. I took delivery of my Rivian in Colorado with Illinois temp tags and registered it in Alaska. Every time I have purchased a vehicle from out of state it has that state’s temporary registration and then I send in my own registration paperwork back to my state.

I have taken delivery of 2 R1Ts. Both delivered to my house in NC by Rivian from Richmond SC. In both cases, they had IL 90 day temp tags and both were registered in FL. Rivian did the paperwork and mailed FL tags to my NC address.

In GA I just told them I want to keep my plates and registered the Rivian to it using their paperwork and took the plate off the old car put on the new car.
