A more nuanced look.

TL;DR. It depends. In a few cases ICE may pencil out ahead. Most, EV cheaper. Biggest determinants: location (power/gas price differential), home charge-DC fast charge ratio, vehicle class

Thank you for the link - it is a pretty balanced article. Still missing key components IMHO - while EV Owners save a bit on ICE car maintenance, we do pay EV Tax (in many states - $100-300 per year) and extensive "tire wearing tax" - about $200-$500 per year. So while you do save money (especially when charging at home), you probably break even or less overall.

IMHO, having EV is more fun than anything else, especially money-saving. And there is nothing wrong with having fun :)

Living in Oregon, looked good to me. Cheap power, expensive gas.

I didn't read through the whole thread but JerryRigEverything on YouTube does a great job debunking the nonsense in that Insider article.

TL;DR Version: Cost per mile operation of an EV is much cheaper than their comparably priced ICE counterparts.

Yes, came to post the WaPo article too. And yes, we are looking good here in PNW...
I appreciated the mention of Anderson in MI, the study the OP was about. Several flaws there...
Also worth noting the "cost of carbon" at the end. Here in the land of hydro, that is a HUGE delta in the most important way. That's why we bought the Rivian, to invest in the technology that will be part of the solution. Given that the alternative was an old full-size hauler, the delta is even bigger.

Even if charging cost came out equal to ICE fuel costs (which they don't in most cases), you definitely save on maintenance costs over ICE vehicles.
We've had our Model 3 for 2.5yrs now and have literally spent $0.00 on maintenance thus far. The Model 3 replaced a 3-Series BMW which required 2X oil changes per year (7 qts full synthetic oil). Over the 2.5year span that would have been 5 oil changes at $60/change (with me doing it myself) adding up to $300 just in oil changes vs. $0.00 for the Model 3.

From Wikipedia:

After Axel Springer SE purchased Business Insider in 2015, a substantial portion of its staff left the company. According to a CNN report, some staff who exited complained that "traffic took precedence over enterprise reporting".[11]

The website has faced criticism for what critics consider its clickbait-style headlines.[47][48][49][50] A 2013 profile of Blodget and Business Insider in The New Yorker suggested that Business Insider, because it republishes material from other outlets, may not always be accurate.

Nit, if you have net metering, charging isn't free, because you'd otherwise be paid for those electrons. And then there's the cost of the solar system. ROI is typically 20-30 years, and panels are typically only good for 25 years, so you're only breaking even.

I like the idea of being able to charge after a natural disaster has knocked out electricity, though you could do the same thing with gallons of gas and a generator, albeit in a more polluting, louder way.
Whoa, 25yrs ROI? Try less than 8 years where I'm at.

I don’t have assigned off street parking (I live in a traditional 2/3 unit condo in Boston) so charging at home is Not an option. Using public chargers, I pay marginally less for electricity than I do gas for my Volvo XC60 ICE. I keep a detailed spreadsheet and it’s about .18 per mile to charge my R1T. I am about 50/50 between Level 2 and Level 3 charging.
